When looking at the quiet, almost sleepy city today, it’s hard to imagine that Bossier City was once as famous as Las Vegas. In the 1930s and ’40s, the Bossier Strip was where it was all happening, with nightclubs, bars, music joints, strip clubs and houses of ill repute. Today, the action is mainly along the Red River, which separates Bossier City from Shreveport; it’s where you’ll find the bright casino lights and entertainment venues, which are much more family-friendly than they were back in the day. Here’s our pick of the best hotels in Bossier City – bookable on Culture Trip.

1. Horseshoe Bossier City, for live entertainment

When driving across the Red River on I-20, entering Bossier City, you can’t miss this skyscraper hotel gleaming in the sun like a giant bar of gold. The views from the rooms are spectacular, especially if you get one facing the river. But this is not what you’re here for, is it? You’re here for the casino downstairs, the two concert venues hosting big-name acts, and the grown-up pool party where the DJs come out to entertain you on Friday and Saturday nights.

2. The Remington Suite Hotel and Spa, for quirky decor

Across the river in the Shreveport entertainment district is this perfect antidote to the sensory overload of a casino resort. You can come to this hotel – a successful pharmacy in its previous incarnation – for contemporary cures in the form of hot-stone and deep-tissue massages at the spa. Exposed brick walls, striking decals, industrial-chic lofts and bold statement wallpaper are among the many quirky decor details that you’ll appreciate if you have an eye for interior design. You needn’t come alone, either; pups are welcome at this dog-friendly hotel, too.

3. Margaritaville Resort Casino Bossier City, for varied dining

The tropical vibes that this chain is famous for work exceptionally well here in sweltering Louisiana, where even the winter days are warm. After a pampering session in the on-site spa, enjoy a signature frozen margarita while watching the river flow past. Afterward, hit the casino; if you’re feeling luckier than what your pockets show, there are on-site ATMs. Padded headboards and crimson bed runners liven up the placid off-white room decor. Dining-wise, you can choose from six different venues, serving everything from brick-oven flatbreads at the Busted Coconut to bacon-wrapped jumbo shrimp at Jimmy’s Seafood & Steak.

5. Residence Inn by Marriott Shreveport-Bossier City Downtown, for a home away from home

Like a really nice home where you don’t have to do the cleaning, this is where you – and your pets – can stay in comfort. When you come back from exploring, take a late-afternoon dip in the pool before warming up next to the firepit. Then whip up something to eat in your in-room kitchen, or get ready for a night on the town. There are several watering holes and restaurants within walking distance, and the casino and concert venues at Horseshoe Bossier City are right next door.

6. Hilton Shreveport, for easy access to the entertainment district

Next to the Shreveport Convention Center on the edge of the Red River District, the Hilton is your solution for being in the middle of all the action when you want to be and then quietly making your escape when it gets to be too much. The rooftop pool and 12th-floor lounge offer views of where the bayou meets the river, and if you’re into sightseeing, check out the nearby Shreveport Water Works Museum, an old pumping station that used to turn all this water into something you could safely drink. On-site dining options range from Starbucks drinks to comfort food at the 104.

7. TownePlace Suites by Marriott Shreveport-Bossier City, for pet-friendly comfort

Don’t fret about having to leave Fido behind when you travel. One of the homiest hotels in Bossier City, comprising cozy studios and suites in a quiet residential area easily accessible from I-20, is pet-friendly. Take a 15-minute drive to Shreveport Dog Park, where your pup can run, swim and play with other dogs. On the way home, stop at one of the dog-friendly restaurants in the city – there’s one about a quarter of a mile (0.4km) from the hotel – for sustenance. While Fido chews on a bone back in your suite, you can cool off in the pool or order some baby back ribs from the nearby Texas Roadhouse.

8. Hilton Garden Inn Shreveport Bossier City, for complimentary shuttle service

This hotel is conveniently located off I-20; however, if you don’t feel like driving, it provides a complimentary shuttle service that will take you anywhere within a 5mi (8km) radius. You can get to the Louisiana Boardwalk, the casinos, the mall and the airport without having to pay a cent. That means a potential wild night out at Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino downtown by the river, followed by a late Cajun dinner at the Blind Tiger and whiskey-based cocktails at Fatty Arbuckles Pub. Afterward, retreat to your spacious room with swirl-patterned carpeting for a good night’s rest.
