Updated: 4 January 2017
Although most St. Patrick’s Day festivities were this past weekend, there’s still a massive lineup of events for the actual holiday this Thursday. Why are we so obsessed with St. Patrick’s Day? We celebrate annually on March 17, the date marked by the death of Saint Patrick, Ireland’s most celebrated patron saint. The festivities commemorate Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. For most Americans though, this holiday is a great excuse for us to celebrate all things Irish, wear green, eat glorious food, and drink Guinness – so here are our tips for your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations this year in Chicago.

Irish Dance Chicago

Chicago’s St. Patty’s Day wouldn’t be the same without some live dancing and music. Head to Irish Dance Chicago, for all kinds of festive entertainment. Even better, it’s all child friendly.

25 Degrees

If you’re not planning on snagging the Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s, then take it to the next level with this classier, craftier version of the Shamrock Shake at 25 Degrees. This clubby spot for custom burgers is featuring its own rendition through March 17th. It will certainly give you that leprechaun buzz, considering its ingredients are Crown Royal, Crème de menthe and includes some extra pizazz – whipped cream and Lucky Charms. You can snag one in the North Side or Wicker Park locations.

Frasca Pizzeria + Wine Bar

An unusual combination is being introduced at Frasca this year, where they’re featuring the normal ingredients of pizza morphed with beer. This phenomenal combination works because it’s made with a Guinness crust, Béchamel sauce (think of that white cream sauce used in lasagna that makes you drool), roasted onions, bacon, an egg, and even three different types of cheese.

This year, Irish coffee was asking for an upgrade, and GreenRiver did just that. Their Irish coffee contains Jameson Caskmates, a special edition whiskey aged in stout-seasoned casks that has more hints of cocoa and butterscotch. Furthermore, the drink includes Cynar, Amaro, their house-blend coffee and homemade whipped cream with nutmeg. Needless to say, it will have most locals believing it’s the most delicious Irish coffee in Chicago.

More Cupcakes

Finally, we have another brilliant Guinness transformation from More Cupcakes. This rich, delectable chocolate-Guinness cupcake will have your mouth watering. This is the perfect treat to bring to your co-workers, to subtly get them in the spirit.

Beginning April 5th, Riverdance will be coming to Chicago for the 20th Anniversary World Tour. You can expect to see new costumes, new lighting, new projections, and the addition of a brand new number, ‘Anna Livia,’ featuring the female members of the Irish dance troupe in an a capella hard-shoe number.

Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle

On Saturday, April 10th, the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continue with Bank of America’s Shamrock Shuffle 8K run. Everyone wears the most ridiculous amounts of green, the most unique get-ups they can find, and the best part is – it’s not just for runners. If the running doesn’t sound appealing, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities, like the post-race beer tents.
