Chicago has a sprawling downtown full of high-rise buildings, which makes finding free parking in the USA’s third most populous city a real challenge. Thankfully, there’s a collection of hotels with free parking, many of which are near the Magnificent Mile and offer complimentary valet or self-parking options, perfect for exploring the Windy City. Here are some of the best.

1. Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park

The Fairmont enjoys a prime location in the heart of downtown Chicago and has a valet service, plus self-parking at the Aqua Building across the street. Overlooking Millennium Park and Lake Michigan, the luxurious 37-floor hotel features sculptures, a statement staircase and a soothing color scheme, along with a bar, a spa and a fitness studio. The presidential suite even has a fireplace and a grand piano.

2. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago – North Shore Conference Center

There’s free self-parking at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, which is ideal if you’re catching a show at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It’s a short drive from downtown Chicago and features a rooftop ballroom with skyline views, seasonal outdoor and indoor pools, as well as an on-site restaurant, Jameson’s Charhouse. One- and two-bed guest rooms boast workstations and large TVs, and you’ll also get a warm chocolate chip cookie at check-in.

This retro yet renovated Americana-style motel has mid-century decor, rough stone walls and a large steel motel sign. Ohio House Motel offers free parking based on availability, a rarity in this central location on the corner of LaSalle Street and Ohio Street in the trendy River North neighborhood. Rooms are pared back, but some have small kitchenettes. It also offers breakfast.

5. Hampton Inn Chicago – O’Hare International Airport

The Hampton Inn Chicago is perfect for airport access, as it’s just 4mi (6km) from O’Hare International Airport. As well as free guest parking, the hotel offers a 24-hour shuttle service to the airport, and there’s easy access to the nearby Donald E Stephens Convention Center. The modern one- and two-bed guest rooms are complemented by a chic fitness center, a gift shop and an indoor pool with a hot tub.

6. Hilton Chicago/Oak Lawn

At the intersection of Route 50 and Highway 20 in the Oak Lawn suburb, this elegant Hilton hotel is 1m (1.6km) from the metro and runs a shuttle service to nearby Chicago Midway Airport. You can enjoy contemporary rooms and free parking on-site, as well as the pool and fitness center. The Hotel at Midtown is a renowned fitness resort with workout facilities spread over three floors. Here, you’ll find huge pools, 16 tennis courts, high-tech gyms and studios for group classes. Venus Williams’s firm, V Starr Interiors, designed the tennis lounge and one of the hotel’s suites. Parking is included at this Bucktown hotel – set 5mi (8km) north of the Loop – where rooms boast downtown views, graffiti art and marble bathrooms. It also has a spa, a rooftop bar and a farm-to-table restaurant on-site.

Stay just two blocks from Chicago Midway Airport at this stylish Hyatt Place hotel.
