End-Of-Season Apple Picking Near Chicago

Picture of Elizabeth Newhart
Updated: 9 February 2017
Apple-picking season is all but over. Even though we associate November with fall fun and activities, most u-pick apple orchards near Chicago open in August and close up shop for the season by Halloween. But you can still squeeze a few fresh apples out of November in the next week or two at these orchards that remain open. But hurry, because those Granny Smiths are going fast!

Royal Oak Farm Orchard

Royal Oak Farm Orchard is a 90-minute drive northwest up by the Wisconsin border, and they’re still picking four different varieties of apples until November 19th. Not only do they stay open longer than almost anywhere else in the state, but they also don’t charge admission or parking fees. Just pay for what you bring home and the activities you choose. They offer a petting zoo, train ride, carousel, orchard tours, and Amaze ‘N Apples, the country’s only apple tree maze. Visit them Monday through Saturday from 10 am-4 pm.

Curtis Orchard

Located in Champaign, Curtis Orchard is farther away from Chicago than the others on this list, but it’s worth the weekend drive. The farm remains open through December for various activities, but their apple picking is winding down fast. You can still pick three varieties of apples on-site and purchase many others in the store. Visit their pumpkin patch, pony rides, and petting zoo while you’re there. And on the weekends, sign up for their themed painting parties.
