The Iranian film industry may not be a topic of acute familiarity to most Chicagoans, but Northwestern University is prepared to change that. The school’s Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, on their Evanston campus, is currently showcasing Salaam Cinema! 50 Years of Iranian Movie Posters. They come from the Hamid Naficy Movie Poster Collection at Northwestern University Libraries Archives and range from the 1960s to the present. The posters reflect the impact of Iran’s political turmoil and social unrest on local film. They reveal a conservative industry whose movies promote traditional values and gender roles through both comedies and dramas. The exhibition is on now through December 11th 2016. An opening reception featuring a gallery talk by the curators will take place on October 6th at 5pm.
