Updated: 10 February 2017
Ahead of the UK release of Moonlight, Culture Trip’s Film Editor Cassam Looch spoke the film’s director, Barry Jenkins, about the independent film going up against the big boys at the Oscars.

Jenkins told us about how the success of the film has taken him by surprise, not least because of the nature of the film and its unique structure.

We also spoke about the use of music throughout the movie, which Jenkins had written into the script. The director told us how he played music on set during the filming of some of the pivotal scenes and his use of ‘chopped and screwed’ genre pieces.

Moonlight is released in the UK on February 17
