Florida’s signature dessert is thought to have originated in Key West in the late 19th century, and though its exact roots are often debated, one thing is for sure: the beloved key lime pie is the state’s staple sweet treat. Here we’ve rounded up some of the best from its birthplace and beyond.

Blue Heaven

Blue Heaven, located in Key West’s historic Bahama Village neighborhood, has been delighting diners with its mix of Floridian and Caribbean cuisine since first setting up shop over 20 years ago. A funky, arty spot, Blue Heaven boasts al fresco dining, live music and a laid-back vibe. Alongside dishes like Jamaican jerk chicken and yellowtail snapper, guests will find its much-loved key lime pie. Made daily with freshly squeezed limes and a graham cracker crust, Blue Heaven’s key lime pie comes topped with one of the most generous portions of meringue in the state.

Key West might have bragging rights as key lime pie’s birthplace, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find great pies elsewhere and Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop & Café in Miami is living proof of that. The brainchild of Derek Kaplan, a firefighter with a passion for baking, the company was established in 2008 and the opening of its café and bake shop in 2014 means its delicious pies are even more readily available. Sunset Grill

Zukie Tzekas, baker and cook at Sunset Grill, the Clearwater-based home-style restaurant she runs with her family, had only around a year’s worth of experience baking pies when she entered her key lime pie in the 2014 American Pie Council’s National Pie Championships. But being a bit green didn’t deter judges and Zukie went on the scoop the award for best key lime pie in the competition’s independent commercial category. She credits her success with the pie’s creamy, rather than tart, flavor and its crust crafted from butter, vanilla wafer, graham crackers and a secret ingredient that gives it that extra kick.
