1. Golden-age glamour at Casa Marina Key West, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Casa Marina may have hosted celebs during the Roaring ‘20s, but these days it’s more like the Woofing ‘20s. It’s a posh pet-friendly hotel that’s just what pampered pooches deserve. Only the ocean view suite will do, as it has a lanai patio for your little darling to stretch out and bask on paws and belly to the sky. Ask room service to send up a lobster dinner, so the two of you can dine like royal corgis. Follow our lead and visit the Higgs Beach fenced-in dog park, right next door, for a seaside stroll under the stars.

2. The Reach Key West, for clean, calming interiors

The Reach is a pet-friendly hotel in Key West that’s within a leash’s length of everywhere you want to be. It’s also a Curio Collection by Hilton property, so the rooms and suites are clean, lean, pale and groovy, and dinner’s delicious – make ours a Cuban coffee-crusted filet mignon. The hotel is only two blocks from the southernmost point of the Continental US – and that’s no doubt a buoy you’ll want a pet-friendly selfie in front of. It’s also home to the sole private natural sand beach on the island, which means people and pets alike can bury their paws in the sand without venturing far from their ocean view room.

3. Zingy margaritas and mojitos at Hyatt Centric Key West Resort & Spa

Treat yourself and Lassie to immaculate sunsets every night at the Hyatt Centric. The property is on the western side of the island, so your suite’s balcony already has a front row seat for the spectacular molten skies at the end of each day. If you’d rather share the sunset with a crowd, Mallory Square is only steps away – roll up to catch the street performers in action. Back at the ranch, the rooms are beach-house cool, with gauzy drapes and pale bed linens, and super-comfy, too (no wonder they’ve trademarked the king and queen Hyatt Grand Beds™). First though, dinner – at SHOR American Seafood Grill, they do crisp salads, fresh jumbo yellowtail snapper and zingy margaritas and mojitos on the cocktail front.

5. Delicious dining at Pier House Resort & Spa

Don’t fear that your doggie will be sleeping on the floor while staying at the Pier House. On the contrary, they’ll be stretching their bellies out on a bed just as luxurious as the one you’re snoozing on. They may not be nibbling on the same fresh conch you are, but they will have their chance to wolf down delicious Pier House dog treats. Pet bowls and waste bags are also included, as is a flashlight in case Rover needs to answer the call of nature under the glow of the moon. Treats for humans include juicy beef and seafood dinners oceanfront at the resort’s restaurant One Duval – and exquisite massages at the cute spa.

6. The Marker, for poolside entertainment

Please note: the Marker may be a pet-friendly hotel portside in Key West, but that does not mean Cuddles has free rein to mark their territory as they please – their bathroom is nearby at the harborfront dog park. You can let yourself off the leash a little, by contrast – and you’ll want to while you’re here, what with three crystalline pools, excellent waterfront dining at Starboard, with its 10-inch hand-tossed brick-oven pizzas, plus al fresco live music in the evening from Wednesday to Saturday. At other times, your room will be bliss: the decor is ocean-blue-and-white, and the ambience is sheer relaxation.

Sail into the Oceans Edge Resort – it’s got a full-service marina – and kick back in an ocean view suite. Your loyal pup will be able to keep a watchful eye on your boat from the balcony, leaving you to explore the resort’s activities. An upbeat evening of potent mai tais and live music at the Yellowfin Bar & Kitchen sounds like the right place to start your night – and possibly end it. And by day? There are six salt-water pools on site, and activities range from diving and fishing to paddleboarding and yoga classes. And breathe out…

It’s always five o’clock in this beach bungalow, and there are plenty of pet-friendly bars within 2mi (3km) for you both to grab a drink. Speaking of, your tail will wag when you hear about Margaritaville’s adults-only activities. Rum tastings, sip-and-paint classes and Shut the Box games are always on deck for guests who want to sit, stay and play. And when it’s time for bed? Hunker down in your one-bedroom suite and drift off calmed by the pale and soothing beach house-like interiors.
