There’s no chance of being bored at this laid-back resort on historic Overseas Highway. Guests can borrow everything from snorkel gear to bicycles to keep themselves busy, or even charter a boat for a fishing trip. Room options include oceanfront studios, three-bedroom suites, and oceanfront cottages sleeping up to eight. Dogs are allowed in a selection of the accommodation if you pay the $100 fee.

Dogs can stay in golf-view double queen rooms and golf-view one-bedroom suites for $70 a night, of which 10 percent goes to a local animal shelter. Elsewhere, there’s 27 acres (11ha) of gardens, three restaurants, a Jack Nicklaus-designed nine-hole golf course, full spa, watersports facility, oceanfront tiki bar and an excellent environmentally focused kids’ club.

This chic hotel comprises two guest houses of dreamy suites that offer extras such as outdoor showers, jacuzzi tubs or private terraces. Rates include breakfast, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel gear, bicycles and yoga lessons, and your pet can join the fun for a $75 charge. Note that children under 16 are not allowed.

Dogs are welcomed with a water bowl, waste bags and a special treat in your room, and can also join you on the patio at the Ciao Hound Italian restaurant to feast on doggie dishes including a Half Hounder.
