These days, it’s hard to find meats that haven’t been pumped with chemicals and raised on factory farms. We’ve searched for our favorite butchers in and around the city of San Francisco, who support local and sustainable meats. Choose from a variety of cuts and take home some of the freshest and healthiest meat.
Avedano’s Meats sells sandwiches, produce, fish, chicken and prepared foods. There is also an upper private dining room area, available for reservation. The market values high quality products by only selling grass-fed beef, seasonal, local and organic produce, and wild-caught and responsibly farmed fish. Their gourmet sandwiches are made to order with produce and meat that comes straight from their store. The menu includes sandwiches such as the lambwich— pulled lamb, pesto, provolone, arugula, sweet peppers— the Artista in Porchetta—provolone, arugula, tomato jam—and many others are highly recommended.
This French boucherie, located in the Dogpatch District, is one of San Francisco’s favorite spots that sells fresh meats straight from farms in the area. Olivier’s Butchery not only cares for the quality of their meats but is also environmentally friendly. Originally from France, founder Olivier Cordier visits ranches personally to ensure that the meat is of the highest quality and they practice sustainable methods with animals that are grass- and grain-fed, humanely treated, and hormone-free. The shop sells pre-cut meats, which vary week-to-week depending on what’s available. Alternatively you can ask for a piece that is not on display and they will cut it for you.

Call ahead or go online before 1pm and order ready-to-heat entrees, which will all be prepared and ready for pick up just in time for dinner.
Bel Campo Meat Co.
Unique to many butchers, Bel Campo Meat Co goes beyond what it means to be a butcher: it is also a farm, processing plant and restaurant. The company’s mission is to bring their customers the best products that are delicious and organic by producing meat in a sustainable way. The butchery’s organic meat comes from the farm and uses traditional hand-cutting methods for all cuts of meat they sell in the store and restaurant.
The Local Butcher Shop Berkeley
