Los Angeles boasts numerous doughnut shops that churn out sweet, oily selections 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The following are the very best of the bunch.

D.K. Donuts & Bakery

D.K. Donuts boasts not only the standard variety of cake donuts, cruellers, bars, twists and glazed donuts but ‘honey-glazed’ and ‘devil’s food cake’ donuts as well as the ‘O-Nut’ (D.K.’s take on the legendary ‘Cronut’), which comes in flavors ranging from Nutella to Hawaiian Spam. Moreover, D.K. Donuts is the first donut shop in the city to feature a selection of waffle-donuts, dubbed WoWNuts. Adventurous foodies can try the Ube donuts (in the cake, O-nut or Wow-nut varieties), which are flavored with a purple tuber indigenous to Southeast Asia and taste like a very sweet butter cake frosting. If you are not in the mood for donuts, the shop offers Muffins, Bagels, Danishes, Scones and Baklava along with a wide array of breakfast and lunch sandwiches (to be enjoyed at any time of day, of course).

Krispy Kreme

Although part of an internationally franchised chain, Krispy Kreme’s Leimert Park Shop just had to make this list. Eating an ‘Original Glazed Doughnut,’ fresh off the deep fryer, is the closest you can get to tasting heaven on earth. The light, springy texture of the dough and the warmth of the sweet glaze combine to make a donut that literally melts in your mouth. As if to enhance the sensory experience, the store provides customers with a view of the doughnut assembly line as they enter, so that they can watch doughnuts get mechanically deep-fried and glazed in anticipation of being devoured. Another reason to come to this store is the full selection of Coffee Bean lattes and Ice-Blendeds.

S.K’s Donuts & Croissants

At first glance, this hole-in-the wall venue may fail to stand out amidst the hustle and bustle of Mid-City Los Angeles. Step inside however, and you will be greeted with a warm welcome by ‘T’, the owner’s son along with a generous whiff of baking. T will likely point you to the ‘Skronut’, S.K’s Cronut, which achieves the very soft and flaky consistency characteristic of a gourmet Croissant and is doused in just the right amount of powdered sugar. Those in the mood for something savory should go for S.K.’s take on a Texas kolache (listed as a ‘sausage roll’), consisting of a juicy, jalapeno-flavored hot dog baked inside a fluffy roll, along with a donut or two, this will provide a satisfying beginning to a long day or a satiating end to an intoxicated night.

California Donuts

As you are heading back from a night of bar-hopping in Downtown this weekend, you might be enticed by a tall, lit-up sign that reads ‘24 hours…donuts.’ If so, you should command your taxi driver to stop, for this is the one and only California Donut. Even at three in the morning, you may encounter a modest line of customers waiting to try one of this store’s creative confections. There is the ‘Panda Donut’ (a cream donut coated in white frosting and Oreo Cookies to make a Panda face), the ‘Blueberry Toast Crunch’ (a blueberry donut coated with pieces of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal) and the ‘Matcha Green Tea Old-fashioned’ (an old-fashioned donut coated in Matcha Green Tea frosting). Unfortunately, the shop only features the ‘specialty donuts’ from around 9am (owing to the extensive amount of preparation time required), depriving you of that breakfast donut fix. But have no fear, you can still order a ‘Chocolate Chocolate Chip Bar’ (a gargantuan, chocolate-filled rectangle smothered in chocolate frosting and coated with chocolate chips) or a sinfully rich ‘Cream Donut’.

Doughnut Hut

Like so much else in Burbank, the Doughnut Hut speaks to a bygone era of simplicity. The ‘hut’ is a quaint little shack whose red-and-yellow streamlined awning could be taken out of Grease or Happy Days. The menu sticks to donuts and pastries, along with a small selection of caffeinated beverages. No Cronut knockoffs available here, but wholesome and flavorful cake donuts, bars, twists and old-fashioneds can be sampled (in moderation of course). The Cinnamon Twist, a glazed twist donut with a cinnamon and nut filling (think Cinnamon Roll turned into twist donut), is particularly delicious.
