University of San Francisco (USF) students may think that their choices are limited and that they have to take the bus to get a good meal, but they are mistaken. There are plenty of good eats right next door in the Inner Richmond, Laurel Heights, Lone Mountain, and NOPA districts. USF is in a prime location for a wide variety of delectable cuisine, including, American, Mexican, Asian, Middle Eastern, Burmese, many European cuisines, and of course, great pub food. Bistro Gambrinus

On the edge of USF’s lower campus is Bistro Gambrinus, an Eastern European restaurant and bar, serving American classics and modern Russian and German cuisine. The casual, European bistro takes reservations if the party is five or more people, otherwise, feel free to walk right in to be seated. The bar was named after Gambrinus, the patron of beer, brewing, and joviality. Needless to say, the restaurant, named after this European hero, offers a wide range of draft and bottled beers.

The Pig And Whistle Bar And Restaurant

For a pub atmosphere around USF, look no further than The Pig and Whistle Bar and Restaurant located behind the Lone Mountain campus on Geary Street. Since 1991, this little joint has been serving delicious pub food and a variety of draft beers all in a comfortable setting with soccer playing on the televisions. The British pub’s menu includes classic English dishes such as fish and chips, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, and Cornish pasties. If that’s not enough to get you to the front door, the Pig and Whistle hosts a trivia night on Wednesdays with great deals.

Velo Rouge Café

The local café near USF is Velo Rouge Café, only two blocks away from lower campus. Breakfast is served at Velo Rouge until 4:30pm, so stop by for one of their delicious breakfast burritos. The café also offers a cozy atmosphere for coffee or sandwiches during lunch. It’s also the perfect rest stop for bicyclists or bicycle enthusiasts because of the café’s fun décor and seating.

Papalote Mexican Grill

Papalote Mexican Grill is the go-to Mexican taqueria in the Lone Mountain and NOPA districts, which includes USF students just down the block. The food is filled with fat-free ingredients, and Papalote also makes an infamous salsa which customers can purchase with chips or even by the jar.

Barrel Head Brewhouse

Located next door to Papalote Mexican Grill is Barrel Head Brewhouse. With a modern industrial setting, the Barrel Head Brewhouse is a cool new space to grab some food, a cocktail, or choose from over 40 beers they offer on tap, including their own house brews. Enjoy some of the tasty comfort foods served in the two-story bar such as salads, sandwiches, burgers, and other large plates. Brunch is also available on both Saturday and Sunday, when customers can enjoy bottomless mimosas.

Hong Kong Lounge II

Hong Kong Lounge II is named as such because it is literally the second Hong Kong Lounge restaurant in the Richmond District. Serving classic dim sum and traditional Chinese small plates, entrees, and noodle dishes, Hong Kong Lounge II is the best restaurant for Asian cuisine around USF. The restaurant makes an excellent causal atmosphere to meet up with a group of friends or family for lunch.

Chapeau!

Open only for dinner Wednesday through Sunday, Chapeau! is an elegant French bistro that serves classic French menu items and delectable wines in an intimate and comfortable setting. In fact, the setting is so inviting that the chef will often come out to greet his customers. Although Chapeau! is upscale, the restaurant still has a more casual atmosphere, providing customers with a fine-dining experience while also feeling at ease with their loved ones across the table.

Jannah

For a great price on tasty Middle Eastern cuisine, try Jannah, located on the edge of NOPA. Even though the interior is decorated exquisitely with linen table cloths and a painted sky ceiling, items on the menu are still excellently priced. Jannah also serves both popular and new Middle Eastern dishes such as kuzi and falafel pizza.

Hurry up and get to Burma Superstar as soon as it opens (5pm for dinner), because the line starts early to get into this Burmese restaurant. If you live in the area and don’t want to rush, just order some food for pick up. If not, enjoy the simple setting inside Burma Superstar with an extensive menu that includes salads, soups, meat and seafood dishes, noodles and rice dishes, and more. Burma Superstar opened in San Francisco in 1992 and, due to its overwhelming success, two more locations were opened in the Bay Area.

Green Chile Kitchen

Green Chile Kitchen is a New Mexican restaurant with dishes such as green chilli stew, tamales, breakfast burritos, pies, gluten-free options, and more. The green chilli flavor is of high importance in New Mexico and is considered to be a superfood to some, it contains more vitamin C than citrus fruit and is ready for picking before the red chilli. Green Chile Kitchen incorporates this delicious flavor in many of their menu items.
