Located between Civic Center and the Inner Mission and just off the Bay Bridge is the trendy San Francisco neighborhood known as SoMa (South of Market). Although once neglected, the neighborhood is now home to some of the best bars, restaurants, and clubs in the Bay Area and serves as the gateway to the heart of downtown San Francisco. The following is a list of the best bars for a night out in SoMa.

Press Club

The Press Club is known for its decadence and an upscale, trendy vibe. Try out the signature cocktails or check out the extensive wine and beer selection for a sophisticated and social night out.

Local Edition

Known as one of the more eccentric bars in San Francisco, Local Edition is a newspaper-themed bar and speakeasy that is always busy. This ‘subterranean hideaway’ will give you a modern taste of the not-so-distant S.F. flair that SoMa was famous for in the mid-to-late ‘90s. Order an Old-Fashioned, and check out the memorabilia.

691 Market St., San Francisco, CA, USA +1 415 795 1375

Tempest is quintessentially San Francisco, with touches of both vintage and modern furnishings and a menu selection that will not disappoint. Play pool, have a beer or cocktail, and enjoy one of the lively and unforgettable nights out that SoMa has to offer.

83 Proof

83 Proof is a two-level establishment; a massive wall of liquor welcomes everyone in search of a stiff drink and there’s a lively and noisy atmosphere. Be prepared to rub elbows with tons of SoMa bar-goers, as it tends to get packed at weekends. 83 doesn’t serve food.

Check out Bloodhound for a laid-back, rustic, hunting lodge vibe and plenty of beer and cocktail options. This neighborhood bar is perfect for those in search of a less noisy and more relaxed night out in SoMa. Far from being a dive bar, Bloodhound doesn’t feel overly trendy, with just enough cool touches to keep it from being overdone. There’s a pool table, a jukebox and even an arcade-style game to keep the good vibes coming all night. Bonus: it’s dog friendly!

Wish Bar and Lounge

Wish Bar and Lounge is perfect for those in search of a bar/club/lounge hybrid without the typical S.F. price tag. Head to Wish for delicious drinks made by friendly and knowledgeable bartenders, house music, and tons of dancing (although the dance area is a bit smaller than you might expect). Check out the Facebook page to see the updated list of nightly DJs you can expect to see.

Bar Agricole

Head over to Bar Agricole for upscale ambiance. Agricole is not only a great stop for drinks, but it also offers a great food menu — all made with fresh (and seasonally available), high-quality ingredients. Architecture buffs will love the clean, modern (and American Institute of Architects award-winning) design.

355 11th Street, San Francisco, CA, USA +1 415 355 9400

Located just outside the bounds of traditional SoMa, Zeitgeist is a cash-only dive bar that is also home to an anomaly in San Francisco: an outdoor area, perfect for taking advantage of those rare warm nights in the city. Don’t be fooled by the no-frills exterior; it’s worth checking out. If you happen upon Zeitgeist, you can expect cheap drinks and food and a chilled atmosphere (in spite of the metal/punk music playing in the background).
