In a city that boasts North America‘s longest-running tiki bar (the iconic Tonga Room), it is not that surprising that San Francisco offers a wide diversity of unusual watering holes. If you’re ready to jump into character, swing by one of San Francisco’s themed bars; our list has the spot for you.

Smuggler’s Cove

If you have watched Pirates of the Caribbean 30 times, or just really enjoy a rum cocktail, the Smuggler’s Cove is your paradise. The front door is unmarked and inconspicuous, but upon entering you are greeted with three floors of swashbuckling-themed decor. The Cove serves up over 200 types of rum, mixed into meticulously handcrafted cocktails.

Novela Bar

Do you like books? Do you like booze? Then you’ll love Novela Bar. With the looks of a library that’s received a glamorous makeover, Novela is a literary lover’s haven. Color-coded tomes line the walls, and portraits of famous authors decorate the back. Head over for Cinema Sundays, featuring movies that have been adapted from classic tales.

Kozy Kar

Be forewarned, this dive bar is not for the overly squeamish or faint of heart. Kozy Kar has pin-up girl posters lining the walls, bras hanging from the ceiling, and the occasional five-second clip of retro porn flashing across the TVs. Stepping into this kitsch bar is like entering a 1970s time warp. The booths are made of anything and everything – old car parts, water beds, half of a jacuzzi, you name it. The drinks here aren’t anything special, but they are strong, which at a bar like this is all you need. Leave your inhibitions at the door, and you’ll have a night you won’t forget (or will you?).

Butter is where San Franciscans go when they want to have an unabashedly good time. The front of the bar is decorated with half of an RV, the themed menu does not disappoint and beer cans are served in paper bags. A live DJ spins hip hop and 1980’s pop, setting the perfect vibe for all-night dancing.
