West Hollywood’s historic Sunset Tower Hotel takes pets seriously. Opened in 1931, it offers four-legged guests mini Sunset Tower beds, food bowls and edible goodies, as well as access to the William S Hart Dog Park next door, which was given to the hotel by the silent film actor. Two-legged guests, meanwhile, can soak up the old-world glamour of this Hollywood institution, which received a modernizing renovation by hotelier Jeff Klein in the early 2000s. Klein’s major addition, the glamorous rooftop Tower Bar, is one of Los Angeles’ premier celeb-spotting haunts.

Pets are no problem at Beverly Hills’ five-star Peninsula. Fully refurbished in 2011, its accommodations range in size and splendor from the elegant Superior Doubles to palatial suites situated throughout the gardens, the largest of which (the Peninsula) has a grand piano, a 10-seater dining table and a hand-painted four-poster bed. Take a seat on the terrace at Le Petit Belvedere for afternoon tea – a decadent offering of dainty sandwiches and sticky cakes – or head upstairs to the Roof Garden, where Californian dishes feature vegetables grown just feet from your table.
