Your Guide To Al Fresco Moviegoing in L.A.'s Endless Summer

Picture of Theresa Christine
Updated: 10 April 2017
It can be easy to miss the fact that it’s now summer in Los Angeles since we’re blessed with pretty agreeable weather year-round. One clear sign that it’s officially summer? Endless outdoor movie screenings! They start as early as April (thank you, Mediterranean climate!) and continue well into October.

Here are the different series of outdoor movies you’ll find in the City of Angels:

Cinespia

One of the more popular choices, these summer showings take place in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Outside food and drink are welcome, but you’ll want to get here somewhat early to claim space.

Alcove Dinner and a Movie

Seating is first come, first served for this free event that takes place the third Monday of the month. Enjoy special dinner and drink offerings out on Alcove Cafe’s patio.

Electric Dusk Drive-In

If retro fun is more your style, see a movie from the comfort of your own car. Tickets are priced per person, but the VIP pass is good for up to 4 people in one automobile.

Street Food Cinema

With multiple films playing throughout the city, including Glendale, Eagle Rock, Culver City and more, you’re sure to find a screening near you. Big plus: as you’d expect from the name, there are food trucks at every film!

Eat | See | Hear

Live music, food trucks and a show. It’s no wonder this popular screening series was named the Best Outdoor Movies winner of Los Angeles Magazine’s Best of LA.

Cal State Northridge’s Summer Movie Fest

Every Thursday night at dusk, a free film plays on the lawn of the Oviatt Library. No alcohol is allowed, but pets are welcome on a leash.

Moonlight Movies on the Beach

This almost sounds too good to be true: free parking, free movies and seats right on Granada Beach.

North Hollywood International Film Festival

Enjoy free films in various NoHo spots. Check their website for promotions with nearby restaurants to bring to the screening.

Bow & Truss

It’s not at all unusual to show up to Bow & Truss movie night dressed up, especially considering their contests and prize giveaways throughout the night. Email them to make reservations.

Dodger Stadium Movies

After you watch the Dodgers (hopefully) kick the butt of the opposing team, hang around after the game to catch a film.

Malibu Country Mart

This free movie night is incredibly relaxed and allows outside food, alcoholic drinks, pets and lawn chairs.

Mr. C Beverly Hills Poolside Cinema Series

Enjoy a luxurious evening of dinner, cocktails and, of course, popcorn. Enjoy the film while spreading out in lounge chairs at this swanky hotel.

Silver Lake Picture Show

This community-oriented event features local live music and short films by up-and-coming filmmakers in LA to accompany each movie night.

Street Style Cinema at The Grove

Cocktails, photobooths and DJs are just some of the amazing extras you’ll find at this movie night. Bonus: bring a children’s book to donate for complimentary parking validation.

Marina Movie Nights

Select Saturday nights in July and August, see a free film at Burton Chace Park. Screenings start at 8pm.

Silents Under the Stars

Perfect for nature-lovers, these silent films are shown in a national park just north of Malibu.

Movies on the Green

This film series takes place Saturdays in August and is geared towards families.

Below are all films taking place from now until the end of the summer. Keep in mind that the guidelines for each film screening will vary regarding start times, outside food, alcohol and chairs. Also, some showings are free while others are ticketed, and some of these series also take place in multiple locations throughout Los Angeles. Make sure to check the websites to confirm dates, times, rules and locations.
