Enjoy a taste of Europe in Belden Place, an alley in San Francisco’s Financial District known as the city’s French Quarter. Sitting at one of the alley’s outdoor patios, you’ll feel like you’re on a European vacation as you taste cuisine from France, Spain, Italy, and more. Let us guide you through the alley’s best restaurants.

B44 is a Catalan restaurant inspired by the rich and festive culture of Barcelona, Spain. Open since 1999, the restaurant features a diverse range of Spanish food, especially the meat- and fish-based dishes Catalunya is known for. Customers rave about the restaurant’s tapas and paellas, especially the B44 Paella, which includes chicken, shrimp, squid, mussels, clams, and vegetables. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating. We suggest pairing your food with a cocktail or something from the restaurant’s award-winning wine list.

Belden Taverna

When people talk about Italian food, they usually imagine carb-loading with pizzas and pastas. In contrast, Belden Taverna is an Italian steakhouse. Enjoy a variety of meats, fish, lobster, clams, and sample dishes like ravioli, risotto, and burgers. Visitors love the restaurant’s short ribs and crab pasta. The restaurant is known for its great happy hour deals, like one dollar oysters, available every weekday from 2:30pm to 6:30pm. Reservations can be made on OpenTable, and a private event room is available, too.

Cafe Bastille

Cafe Bastille is a French bistro bringing a taste of the Parisian lifestyle to San Francisco. Come in for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays to enjoy a variety of egg dishes and even bottomless mimosas. The outdoor terrace lets you enjoy sidewalk dining blocked off from the wind and surrounded by heat lamps to keep the San Francisco chill at bay. Expect a relaxed atmosphere and excellent service as standard.

Sam’s Grill

Sam’s Grill is a restaurant founded by Irishman Michael Molan Moraghan that’s been selling oysters in San Francisco since 1867. Known as “The Oyster King,” his company thrived for years. One of his successors opened Sam’s Grill & Seafood Restaurant in 1936, making Sam’s one of the oldest restaurants in San Francisco. Now, this Irish-inspired restaurant is known for serving up a range of oyster dishes, in addition to its fresh calamari, shellfish, and other charcoal-broiled fish. You can even enjoy Dungeness crab here when it’s in season.

Cafe Tiramisu

Cafe Tiramisu is a restaurant featuring Northern Italian cuisine, with predominantly outdoor seating as well as quick and friendly service. Locals love the cafe’s risotto and desserts, especially the tiramisu. Try the grilled octopus appetizer, served over avocado, celery, and salmoriglio sauce. The restaurant will transport you to ancient Italy, with murals covering the walls that recall the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and other iconic Italian scenes. Pair your food with a great selection of wine or something from the full bar to complete your experience.
