Pickers and thrifters are a dedicated group of people. They wake up early, travel to remote and sometimes unpleasant places, they dig through other people’s junk and rarely go home empty handed. It’s all for the thrill of finding the same action figure you lost when you were seven, a 1950s cupcake party dress or an old barn door to upcycle into a dining table. Whether you love vintage clothing, oddities, antiques or one-of-a kind goods, the city by the bay has a wealth of used treasures to be found. From thrift stores to weekly fleas, these are the best places to find vintage treasures in San Francisco.

The Treasure Island Flea

The Treasure Island Flea is the perfect excuse to check out San Francisco’s much overlooked kid sister, Treasure Island. Take a quick ride on the 25 bus and prepare to see some of the most breathtaking views of the city paired with antiques, handmade goods and delicious food. Enjoy live music, drinks and an entire day’s worth of entertainment. Be sure to bring your own reusable bags and a light jacket, as it can get windy.

Last weekend of every month: 10am-4pm

Out of the Closet

Out of the Closet Thrift Stores are an important institution for San Fransisco treasure hunters, and can be a source of unexpected treasure. From ‘new in box’ mens leather underwear to handpainted antique kimono’s, Out of the Closet is a wild card. This is not your traditional destination for vintage shopping. It’s much more like a thrift store, so if you’re more of an ‘antiquer’ skip it. But if you don’t mind the hunt, Out of the Closet has great pickings. Insider tip: You aren’t going to find any great furniture, housewares etc. here. This shop is best for vintage and unique clothing.

Open Daily 10am-7pm, Sundays 10am-6pm

Out of the Closet, 1498 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA, USA, +1 415 771 1503

The Alemany Flea

The Alemany Flea Market gets mixed reviews from locals. Some say that on the right day, in exactly the right conditions, you can find an array of antiques and interesting old housewares. Others say don’t waste your time on this collection of garage sales. Isn’t every venture into a thrift store, flea market or antique shop exactly the same? Sometimes you find junk, sometimes you find a unicorn. The Alemany Flea is no different. If you like your vintage shopping experience to be pristine, this is not for you. Grab a few bags and get dirty for the best finds.

Every Sunday 7am-3pm

One Half

One Half isn’t an antique store or a vintage shop, but there is a secret cache of wonderful things to be found here. This unique store has everything from huge coffee table books at incredibly affordable prices to fancy french soaps to beautiful hand-woven shawls and wacky kitchen accessories. You never know what you will see for sale! The prices are surprisingly low and this is an absolute go-to for greeting and birthday cards that aren’t boring.
