Los Angeles embodies every expectation that a local music aficionado wants in live music: a plethora of bands, art, food, and good vibes. Compared to mass produced music events which can lead to a hundreds of dollars weekend, why not attend a local music/art event in the community and socialize with those that make these special events possible? Here is a list of unique block party music events that make the LA experience worthwhile!

Echo Park Rising- August 14-16, 2015

In its fifth year, Echo Park Rising is a free neighborhood music event that is hosted by the Echo Park Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with various artists and small establishments that create an eclectic weekend for music-goers. The event centers mainly around the blocks of Alvarado Avenue, Sunset Blvd, Glendale Blvd, and Echo Park Avenue drawing people from all directions. EPR caters to all ages however, areas can be reserved for a 21+ only crowd where alcohol is served. The majority of businesses carry the pocket-size event maps that will guide you to the venues hosting artists to help make sure you do not miss out!. The music featured includes a variety of contemporary music genres, including kaleidoscope, beach-punk, acid-psychedelia, instrumental, hip-hop, jazz, latin, more. This event gives fans the opportunity to scope musicians like Wax Dolls, Gooch Palms, and Vinyl Williams, plus paying homage to resident DJ artists such as J-ROCC.

Sonic Submarine: The Second Voyage August 22, 2015

Home to the Santa Monica Pier and sandy coastal beaches, The Third Street Promenade in Downtown Santa Monica has paired up with KCRW DJs to bring audiences the euphoric sounds of funk and electronic for this years’ second annual music festival- Sonic Submarine: The Second Voyage. This event is ideal for visitors and locals alike. Who wouldn’t love a blissful long day at the beach that transitions into an evening with beautiful sunset views and crisp vinyl sets starting at 6pm? The epicenter is located between Santa Monica Blvd and Arizona Avenue making this foot traffic event possible. Sonic Submarine is free for everyone so dancing and smiles are highly encouraged to catalyze this melodically night of jubilant sound waves for a knockout end of summer.

FYF Fest August 22-23, 2015

F@ck Yeah Fest, also known as FYF Fest, began in 2004, and has found a new home at The LA Sports Arena & Exposition Park. In its 11th year of production and now teaming up with Goldenvoice, in addition to other partners and non-profits, FYF Fest is setting a precedent of what is yet to come for the large scale music festivals that occur in LA. This event draws an array of artists that will not disappoint from Chet Faker, Kaytranada, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, to veteran classics like Morrissey, Bloc Party, and D’Angelo and the Vanguard. Check out the list of festival frequently asked questions under the ‘Festival Info’ tab for items that are allowed and NOT allowed into the venue (a few things not to bring to the venue are self-sticks, go pros, and glow sticks to be on point!) Single day tickets are sold out for this event but there are general admission and VIP tickets still available. You do not want to miss out because this year FYF Fest is going to be for the books!

FIGat7th Downtown Festival July 10-August 28, 2015

FIGat7th is the Downtown LA festival to check out this summer with multiple events that take place in different public spaces around Figueroa and 7th in Downtown Los Angeles. This series is partnered by Art Brookfield, KCRW DJs- Anthony Valadez, FUSICOLOGY, TASTE, Raw Inspiration, and others to incorporate free live music, art, and entertainment, encouraging the interaction of Los Angeles’ multi-cultural identities. Those that attend FIGat7th will find the schedule of events are organized by entertainment alternatives which are suitable for everyone to enjoy. Basking in the ambiance of the downtown cityscape, FIGat7th hosts live music in the plaza and courtyard, kids activities, a record listening party, painting + wine nights, movie screenings nights, and farmers’ market. CommUNITY Block Party September 12, 2015

Formerly known as De La Soul Events, Indigenous Rhythms Events presents CommUNITY Block Party, hosted at Simply Wholesome Health Food Store & Restaurant on September 12th from 12pm-9pm. Providing a delicate niche environment for rising and underground artists, Indigenous Rhythms Events (IRE) sheds light on the cultural consciousness of hip-hop, reggae, afro beats, jazz, and R&B. It emphasizes the importance of cultural diversity and raw ideas through the medians of music, art, dance, and healthy food. IRE provides a selection of vegetarian, vegan and kosher food items including organic poultry and sea food options. Tickets for this event can be purchased online or at the event itself.

10th Annual Venice Beach Music Fest -September 12, 2015

Pioneers of signature community grass-roots involvement, Venice is celebrating this September with Venice Beach Music Fest 10. Welcoming artists and street performers from all walks of life for decades, the organic curation of this event is essentially paying tribute to these individuals that come to Venice Beach to make their voices known. The event is located at Windward Avenue between the boardwalk and the bike trail. Free to the public, Venice Beach Music Fest 10 showcases a range of world-class and local musical acts, dancers, authors, and artists, and runs from 11am until 7:30pm. A parade will lead the procession from Ocean Front Walk ending at Windward Park Plaza ..An after party hosted by Danny’s Venice starts at 8pm to give music-lovers a chance to hear more live music and interact with independent artists. Venice Beach Music Fest 10 is affiliated with Venice Spring Fling, a sister event that occurs earlier in the year.

Los Angeles Podcast Festival September 18-20, 2015

With Angelenos constantly on the go and in the car, listening to podcasts to get entertainment, educational, and, informative usage while multitasking. This year the fourth annual LA PodFest presented by Audible is taking place at the Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills. LA PodFest is celebrating podcasts and the exchange of podcasters and fans together in one space. LA PodFest is a three-day spectacular event where podcast enthusiasts get to witness live podcast recordings, panels, special events, parties including a special standup comedy show on Saturday 19. Mad Decent Block Party September 19-20, 2015

World-renowned producer, Diplo, has his Mad Decent record label serving up a two-day event at the Los Angeles Studios Center as part of the Mad Decent Block Party city tour. Initiated in July, this 18+ music event will have the vibrating sounds of global pop and electronic music variations by Major Lazer, Netsky, and many others. Tickets are still available for this event that is drawing crowds from all corners of Los Angeles. As with other large large scale music events that take place in Los Angeles, it is advised to review the Mad Decent Block Party FAQs page on guidelines for festival attendees to abide by in order to insure everyone has a good time and parties safely.

Abbot Kinney Festival September 27, 2015

In less than two months away, the 31st annual Abbot Kinney Festival is taking Venice by storm! This is a free day event functioning from 10am until 6pm on Abbot Kinney Boulevard working in tandem with some of the chilliest businesses that Venice has to offer. The abundance of vendors, food trucks/booths, kids rides and games, kids stages, live music stages, and beer gardens makes this last Sunday in September the quintessential place to be.
