The 90th Scripps Spelling Bee is on the horizon and what better way to celebrate the historic vocabulary — v-o-c-a-b-u-l-a-r-y, vocabulary — competition than with our own spelling bee?

Culture Trip hit the streets of San Francisco to ask people how to spell athletes’ names from the area’s professional sports teams: San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Athletics, Golden State Warriors and San Jose Earthquakes.

How would you have done?

The Scripps Spelling Bee began in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee to promote literacy and reading among students. Ninety years later, the event reaches 11 million students each year. The Spelling Bee has gotten so big it is even broadcast nationally on ESPN.

The Preliminaries for the 2017 Scripps Spelling Bee are May 31 with the Finals on June 1.
