Star Wars fans, get excited – a Jedi academy has opened in San Francisco. LudoSport is an international company that runs Jedi academies around the world, and on October 15th, the company opened its first American location in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. The academy is located at Studiomix on Van Ness, a fitness studio that offers a variety of classes.

The first LudoSport Academy was founded ten years ago in Milan, Italy by Simone Spreafico, Gianluca Longo and Fabio Monticelli. Since then the company has expanded to open schools all over the world, with locations in Italy, England, Ireland, France, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Russia, and now the United States.

LudoSport is no joke – this jedi academy takes its sport very seriously. The training is made up of ten rules, and there are seven different forms of light saber combat involved. There are various levels determined by skill level and distinguished by specific uniforms, similar to the colored belts of karate. ‘Players are rated on experience, fighting skills, and technical quality (presumably by someone who fancies himself a present-day Obi-Wan Kenobi),’ Beth Spotswood writes in SFGate. Participants are also able to earn points by attending classes and dueling other members. According to the LudoSport website, the light saber used is ‘a sword with a weightless blade, a 360° edge that cuts everything except itself.’ Not only can you learn light saber technique at the academy, but once you learn the trade you can sign up to participate in official competitions, some even crossing national borders.

To learn the trade yourself, you can opt to visit the Studiomix center for classes. Alternatively, check out Golden Gate Knights, an organization that has been hosting classes and practicing light saber fighting techniques in San Francisco since 2011. If you live on the east side of the country, don’t worry – a LudoSport academy is coming to Boston soon.
