Conventions and California usually draw up one collective thought: San Diego Comic-Con, the massive annual comic book and pop culture convention. In truth, conventions aren’t just a destination for those obsessed with pop culture anymore. This year, Los Angeles will host a range of gatherings—from film and anime festivals to events for beauty lovers and foodies. Here are eight riveting conventions coming to L.A. in 2018.

Film Con Hollywood

When: March 24, 2018

Where: The Los Angeles Convention Center

What: Film Con is a chance for young creators (and aspiring creators) to come together and connect with other people looking for like-minded collaborators. This event also hosts a film competition for student filmmakers, with the grand prize winners in every category receiving $3,000 to help finance their next project. Film buffs and cinephiles are also welcome to attend the event, which will feature Q&As and panels with industry professionals from studios—such as Disney and Netflix—workshops, networking, pitching opportunities, and more.

The ipsy Gen Beauty Convention

When: March 24–25, 2018

Where: The Los Angeles Convention Center

What: The ipsy Gen Beauty convention is a place for beauty lovers (or “ipsters,” as the brand likes to call their fans) to meet up and divulge their passion for one another. The conference brings together creators and influencers, as well as beauty addicts, and promises every attendee an “epic” gift bag valued at more than $400. For more information, check out the ipsy website.

Where: Magic Box at The REEF

What: A convention for self-proclaimed food lovers, Foodie Con bills itself as “Comic-Con for foodies” and promises two days of shopping and educational events. During these events, both professional and amateur foodies will connect with the newest trends in eating and making food and some of the most talented local chefs, food trucks, craft breweries, and more. For more information, visit the Foodie Con website.

RuPaul’s DragCon 2018

When: May 11–13, 2018

Where: The Los Angeles Convention Center

What: This three-day event is a celebration of art, pop culture, and all things drag. DragCon, an homage to the cult following of its icon, RuPaul, features talents and panels, more than 300 vendors and even a kid zone because it’s a family-friendly weekend. For more information, visit the DragCon website.

WhedonCon 2018

When: May 18–20, 2018

Where: Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills

What: An all-out nerdfest for fans of Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse), WhedonCon is something of a cult event. The three-day convention includes cosplay contests and panels (fandom convention staples), in addition to talent meet and greets, autograph sessions, live music, and a special party called “The Prom at The Bronze.” Prices vary depending on the selected package and how many days guests want to attend, but more information is available at the WhedonCon website.

Sherlocked USA

When: May 25–27, 2018

Where: Marriott LAX

What: For the particular fans of BBC’s Sherlock series, Sherlocked USA is a fan favorite. The convention will feature cast and creators from the hit show as well as “a variety of Sherlock-themed activities and events.” For more information, visit the Sherlocked USA website.

Anime Pasadena 2018

When: May 26, 2018

Where: The Pasadena Convention Center

What: An anime nerd’s dream come true, this convention welcomes fans of anime and cosplay and bills itself as a “local alternative to Anime conventions hundreds of miles away.” Anime Pasadena boasts a list of attractions, including more than 120 vendors, cosplay contests, “nerd karaoke,” live music, anime and cosplay panels, and more.
