Flights can be frustratingly expensive, especially for those of us who want to see the whole world. But what measures would you take to make your flight cheaper or even free?

An app and website called Airmule is offering to pay passengers for their luggage space, making the cost of flying a little more affordable. The company’s offer is simple – instead of checking a bag on a flight, you check one of their packages instead, and they pay you for it.

Your first reaction may be skeptical, but the packages are all from TSA-approved shipping companies, meaning you’re probably not going to get busted for drug smuggling when you reach your destination.

If you’re someone who never checks a bag and takes a carry-on only, this app could be perfect if you’re entitled to one free checked bag anyway. Not only that though, if you’re going in the right direction, from Los Angeles to China for example, you can get ridiculously cheap flights, or even free trips, by agreeing to take baggage with you.

It’s one of the more novel ideas for making air travel cheaper, and has the added benefit of improving the efficiency of shipping items across the world. If you don’t check a bag, that space goes to waste anyway. Becoming a mule has never been so tempting.
