Spotify's Most-Streamed Artist, Song, Album of 2017 All Belong to One Musician

Ed Sheeran may have been snubbed a nomination for Album, Song, and Record of the Year at the 2018 Grammys, but who cares about the Academy when you’ve won the hearts—and streams—of the people?

Spotify has released their Year in Music list for 2017, and the global most-streamed artist, song, and album all belong to Sheeran. The British crooner beat out Drake, who dropped to second place after topping the platform’s list for the past two years, with 6.3 billion streams. Rounding out the top five are The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and The Chainsmokers.

“Shape of You” became the most-streamed track in Spotify history, once again dethroning Drake and his similarly dancehall-inspired hit “One Dance,” racking up over 1.4 billion streams and counting in 2017. However, right behind Sheeran in the second and third spots are Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s original, and Justin-Bieber-featuring remix of “Despacito,” and the combined streams of both variations of the track currently total nearly 1.7 billion plays.

And finally is the pop artist’s ÷ (Divide), which has accumulated over 3.1 billion listens since it released in March. Unsurprisingly, the album is extremely popular in his native U.K., topping the country’s most-streamed albums—his 2014 record x even took the fifth spot on the list—whereas it took the fifth spot on the U.S. list, falling behind Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN., Drake’s More Life, Post Malone’s Stoney, and The Weeknd’s Starboy.

Noticeably absent among the platform’s top five most-streamed artists, songs, and albums worldwide are female artists—like, a single one. The music industry’s enduring sexism aside, Rihanna was crowned the top female artist for the third year in a row, and while she topped the U.S. lineup, she came in second to newcomer Dua Lipa in the UK.

Spotify also noted the year’s breakout artists, including newly solo acts Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony, and Harry Styles and Liam Payne of One Direction. Finishing up the list are two surging trap acts: Florida’s Lil Pump and Ohio’s Trippie Redd.

Check out Spotify’s most-streamed breakdowns below, along with comparisons between the U.S. and U.K., and the year’s emerging genres, which includes chaotic black metal, future funk, and vintage swoon.
