FASHION | Check Out The Iconic Dresses Of Frida Kahlo

If you’re even vaguely interested in the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, you should head down to her former home-turned-museum this month to enjoy a one-off exhibition of her instantly recognizable clothes. From skirts to swimsuits never before seen, it’s an insight into her personal life and style.

CULTURE | Mexican Sensuality Is Under The Microscope This Month

Throughout December you can peek into the sexual lives of the Mexican people with this exhibition at Carlos Monsaváis’ Museo del Estanquillo. Spread over the fourth floor, the private collection chronologically follows the development of sexuality and sensuality in Mexico through personal artifacts and mini-essays by the late Monsaváis himself. Both homosexuality and feminism will be touched on in the exhibit.

PHOTOGRAPHY | Check Out The Work Of Graciela Iturbide

Graciela Iturbide is one of Mexico’s most renowned photographers and this month the Museo Universitario del Chopo will be playing host to her work. The exposition is to celebrate 45 years of the Festival Rock y Ruedas, at which she took her first tentative steps into the photography world. As well as the photos, there will be an audio-visual room displaying videos from the 1971 festival.

ART | Take A Look At The Artworks Of German Painter Otto Dix

In a continued celebration of the dual year of Germany and Mexico, catch this excellent exhibition of famed German painter Otto Dix’s work. One of the most significant German artists of the 20th century, his work is marked by passion, violence and so much more. ART | Remedios Varo On Display At The Museo de Arte Moderno

As one of Mexico’s best surrealist artists, ranked up there with Frida and Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo’s artwork makes for essential viewing. Right through to February 2017, you can take a look at some of her most representative pieces at Mexico City’s Museo de Arte Moderno. From alchemy to literature, psychoanalysis to science, all Varo’s interests can be observed here, as can several biographical elements.

THEATER | Go See A Stage Production Of El Hombre De La Mancha

MUSIC | Get Your Jazz On At Festival Bestia

For music lovers, there’s always something going on in Mexico City and December is no exception. This month you can stop by Festival Bestia, predominantly a jazz festival, but one that also dabbles in experimental music. The fourth edition of this youthful event will feature appearances by Simulacrum and the English group Godflesh, and even Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth fame.

ART | Painting Series Joe-Looking For Love On Display In Roma

Rounding off the dual year of Germany and Mexico doesn’t just end with the famed Otto Dix, but also the rather lesser-known but equally excellent artist Tom F. Klein. This month, he will be presenting a series of paintings titled Joe-Looking For Love in the quirky Roma neighborhood. Similar to pointillism, Klein’s style is impressive and well worth checking out.

MUSIC | Listen To The Vocal Stylings Of Devendra Banhart Live

Devendra Banhart has one of the smoothest, most recognizable voices in the often indistinguishable field of indie folk music, and this month he’s coming to Mexico City to perform at El Plaza Condesa. SPORT | Drive Round The Track At Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez

MUSIC | Get Beatle-Mania All Over Again In Mexico City

CHRISTMAS | Go Ice Skating in the Zocalo

While the dates are yet to be confirmed, each year the Mexico City Zocalo transforms into a magical winter wonderland complete with a huge (and free!) ice rink right in the center. Finally, you can ring in the new year with any one of the Manicomio del Circo de los Horrores showings at Mexico City’s Gran Teatro Moliere. A wild and wonderful show that combines elements of circus with cabaret and theater, the mixture of horror and comedy makes for a night full of laughs and screams in equal measure. One of the new characters this time round will be Alice in Nightmareland, rather than Wonderland.
