More mellow than neighboring Huatulco, Puerto Escondido is a small fishing village and surfers haven that in the past 20 years has boomed as a favorite spot for tourists on the Oaxacan coast. While still less of a luxury crowd, the town now offers more food, drink and entertainment that it ever has in the past and has a wide range of hotels to suit different budgets and travel styles.

A hidden paradise just a short ways from Puerto Escondido, this hotel has its own private stretch of beach as well as an Olympic-size pool. Run by the oh-so-chic Grupo Habita out of Mexico City, private casitas have a view of the ocean and hammocks to swing in on your private patio. The hotel is eco-conscious as well with solar power and no single-use plastic bottles. Most of the ingridients in the restaurant are locally grown and there is complimentary wifi throughout.

If you want to just hang out on the beach and have everything taken care of for you, Posada Real Puerto Escondido is a great spot. The hotel has onsite dining, two swimming pools, beach club, tennis court, putting green, beach volleyball, and mini soccer. This 3-star resort offers guests both a “drink inclusive” option for their stay which includes all non-alcoholic and national liquor brand cocktails, and an “all-inclusive” which includes meals. Their rooms are mostly identical with either king-sized or two double beds — all accommodations include wi-fi, complimentary bottled water, cable TV and a coffee maker. While located right on the beach, they are also just steps from all the main activities in the town pr Puerto Escondido.

Rustic villas that allow you to commune with the tropical nature around you await at Villa Mozart y Maconda. Prices are accesible and rooms have a barefoot-chic to them that travelers who like things simple will love. An outdoor cafe serves wholesome Mexican cuisine and art adorns the surfaces both inside and out. Their tropical garden is full of endemic plants and flowers to admire and Carrizalillo beach, one of Puerto Escondido’s main beaches is just blocks away for surfing, sunning and getting your vitamin D.

This 4-star hotel is located in Puerto Escondido between Zicatela and Marinero Beaches. The hotel offers six room categories: 50 Standard Rooms, 6 Junior Suites, 2 Master Suites, 2 Presidential Suites, 8 Bungalows. The standard rooms overlook the hotel gardens and the other, higher categories have ocean views. The Bungalows and Presidential suites are the largest with living areas, balconies and in some cases kitchen areas. The hotel’s restaurant gets rave reviews and is a mix of Mexican and international fare under the direction of chef Nicolas Rojas.

Founded by two Swiss travelers in 2009, Hotelito Swiss Oasis is a downhome, colorful locale, with personalized hospitality and a fantastic location on Playa Zicatela (Zicatela beach). This hotel has a swimming pool, a large outdoor terrace and a selection of accessibly priced rooms all with balcony, AC, mosquito nets and private bathrooms. They pride themselves on being eco-friendly, with main buildings constructed of adobe bricks and palapa roofs. The hotel organizes tours and will take guests out for surf lessons on the local beaches. For a bright and homey budget option, this hotel is the perfect spot.

Bright and colorful, the rooms at Hotel Suites Villasol are comfortable and cozy, with six different categories that include standards with balconies, and a master plus room with its own bar, dining area, and living area. They have two on-site restaurants, a great outdoor pool and even though they are in town and not on the beach, Villasol has its own beach club right on the water that they provide complimentary transportation to. This 4-star hotel hosts ongoing events throughout their high season including movies on the beach and baby turtle release program.

The Villas Carrizalillo are a collection of 12 beachside villas that range in size from 1-bedroom studios to three-bedroom units. Each of the villas are slightly different, with an overarching decor that is simple, yet warm and welcoming, with wooden accents, Mexican tiles and patterns and bechy touches like hammocks and outdoor rocking chairs. Each villa has great sunset views and all but three have kitchens for the benefits of a house rental without the hassle. There is an on-site restaurant, daily cleaning service, wi-fi and a swimming pool, as well as a library and game room. While the location is perfectly isolated overlooking the bay of Playa Carrizalillo, the villas are a short distance from town and the airport and walking distance of shops to buy basic supplies.
