In recent years, mezcal has been grabbing the international spotlight, so it’s no wonder that many of Tulum’s best bars focus heavily on tequila’s smoky hipster cousin. Terraza Nawal is a trendy bar owned by the mezcal brand Nakawé, and it offers an extensive range of mezcal shots and cocktails. Inside, you’ll find rustic décor and a loyal base of regulars.

The welcoming, laid-back joint hosts great DJs and live music events, but it is best known for its incredible cocktails. The owners Felipe and Samuel are often found behind the bar and are willing and ready to prepare any cocktail that you can think of.

Located in the backyard of the Casa Jaguar restaurant, Todos Santos is named after the bohemian town on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and reaches for a similar hippie but chic vibe. The bar, which sits in a small yet beautifully designed venue, also hosts excellent local DJs and its dinner party every Thursday night.

Damajuana Mezcaleria Tulum

Artisanal mezcal is the specialty at the Damajuana Mezcaleria. Choose from dozens of expertly made cocktails or brace yourself and down a straight shot of the famously smoky spirit. The drinks and food are affordable, and the staff is very welcoming. The venue also regularly draws the crowds with electronic and house DJ events. Yet do bear in mind that volume levels are often at full blast, so this is not the best place for quiet conversation.

Pasito Tun Tun

Pasito Tun Tun has really made its mark on Tulum’s bar scene in recent years, offering an extensive mezcal menu and a fun, laid-back atmosphere. The bar takes its rather unique name from a dance move and famous song. Inside, its décor is dominated by wooden fittings, swings and a looming palm tree. If you’re hungry, check out the menus because Pasito Tun Tun also serves excellent food.

To find Batey, keep an eye out for the multi-colored Beetle parked just outside. The old vehicle has been repurposed as a mojito bar and sugarcane juice extractor. Beloved by foreigners and locals alike, the eccentric Cuban venue offers legendary cocktails and an enjoyable atmosphere. The colorful bar also hosts live bands, singers, and open mic performers.

Although La Suerte del Coyote is a little out of the way, it is definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for a quiet romantic night. The elegant venue boasts a bright, spacious interior, and the service is excellent. While it is not the cheapest spot to drink in Tulum by a long way, it is a great place to sample excellent local cuisine followed by a few trendy mezcal cocktails.
