The dreamer behind this paradise is Colombian-born Lio Malca, a gallerist and art collector now based in New York City. Malca discovered the evocative property in 2012 and purchased it soon afterwards from it’s original owner (to whom it had been returned following Escobar’s death).
Now it is an art-lover’s heaven on Earth, featuring incredible contemporary pieces by the likes of KAWS, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, among others. Plus the art, which is all from Malca’s own collection, is constantly being rotated, so on any given visit you will experience a diverse selection of works.
Operated by Design Hotels, the five-star resort is set on 180 metres (591 foot) of pristine beach and boasts just 42 rooms, with 9 located in the original house and the rest in an architecturally similar, two-storey buildings built as add-ons for more space.
With rates starting at £450, the price tags may not be friendly, but the experience is second-to-none. Whether you want to take in the sunset from the rooftop bar, enjoy the James Turrell-esque light installation in the steam room, lounge by the pool, dip your toes in the sea, binge watch Narcos in an incredibly appropriate setting or just stare for hours at the insane Keith Haring wallpaper, Casa Malca is a dream holiday.
So what are you waiting for? Vamonos!
