It just goes to show that you don’t need to take classes in order to be a photographer, as seen on Matt C.’s (aka @416citizen) Instagram account. Growing up in a photographer-friendly home (both his father and uncle were photographers, as a hobby and professionally), Matt has been taking pictures for as long as he can remember but has never had a formal photography education. The process is a long one; learning through trial and error has been the method of choice, and exploring all that the world has to offer.

A classic CN Tower shot, showcasing an aerial of the city and Lake Ontario. Not afraid to take chances, Matt C. is viewing the city from new heights!

Photographers must be willing to take risks and cross those barriers into places no one has been – or at least in a few years!

Exploring the subway tunnels under Toronto is quite an eerie experience but results in an awesome photo-op.

Two very different scenes mixed into one, offering a striking contrast between them; city meets abandoned train tracks.

Abandoned buildings are a common subject of this Instagram account, offering a window into the past where the decay is met with modern graffiti.

After being closed for a decade, nature is starting to take over with vines winding their way through windows

An eerie shot from behind bars at an abandoned prison.

A change of scenery from the usual grey tones and decay. Though a common theme found on @416citizen’s page, this vibrant light display takes on new forms in new settings every time!

Matt C. gathers his inspiration from his friends and family who have always supported him, in addition to the countless other photographers from all around the world.

Another colourful image; a mirrored version of the highway at night that catches the eye with its movement and vibrancy.
