The top Montreal hostels ensure you not only have a comfortable place to stay, but somewhere you can make friends, enjoy guided activities and experience everything this one-of-a-kind city has to offer.

Montreal is a city of big personality: a vibrant hub for nightlife, mouth-watering food and Quebecoise culture. When you’re not exploring Old Montreal, wheezing up Mount Royal (it’s not that high, really), or catching a drag show at Cabaret Mado, simply enjoy all the fine places to dine, drink and have fun. That all complements backpacker travel, and there are a range of superb hostels in Montreal to that end.

This hip hostel has a choice of bunk dorms and private rooms, all with a classy look with dark-wood floors and headboards resembling Japanese shoji screens. The wooden roof deck is a great place to hang with fellow travelers, whether in the open-air hot tub or a table over some drinks, while indoor communal areas include a pool table and a bar where regular happy hours and cocktail classes are held.

2. Alexandrie-Montreal

Nestled between the Latin Quarter, Old Town and Gay Village, the Alexandrie features homey, traditional dorms and private rooms, with metal bunks or wooden beds, desks and cozy armchairs. There’s a large kitchen where you can cook and chat with your fellow guests; communal dinners are a sociable affair, and are normally followed by drinks before group nights out in the epic Montreal nightlife.

4. Le Gite du Plateau Mont-Royal

A meeting point for backpackers from across the world, this vibrant place has everything you’d want from a hostel. Six- to eight-bed dorms have individual lockers and reading lights, while private rooms come with ensuite bathrooms and kitchens. From guided tours of the Old Town to barbecue nights and concerts on the roof terrace, there’s no end of activities at this friendly hostel.

5. Auberge L'Apéro

Hostel

The unpretentious, comfortable dorms at Auberge L’Apéro, set in an old greystone building dating from the 1880s, make the perfect base from which to explore the historic and cultural sights and vibrant nightlife of downtown Montreal. The Old Port and Notre Dame Basilica are both nearby, and also not to be missed is Mount Royal, the grassy hill after which Montreal is named.

6. HI Montreal Hostel

This stylish hostel has a rugged, rustic feel to it, with wooden floors and rough-hewn furniture in the private rooms – an aesthetic which extends to the dorms, with four- and six-bed options available. The onsite café is a great place to kick back with a coffee during the day or a local craft beer with fellow travelers in the evening, while the Museum of Fine Arts is among the attractions within easy reach.

Run by travelers for travelers, the backpacker spirit abounds at Samesun, from the sociable kitchen where you can prepare dinner with your new friends to the garden bar, where coffee and drinks are served in booths beside trellises crawling with ivy. Private rooms and dorms are available; walls are decorated with the fleur-de-lis symbol that adorns the Montreal flag.

Housed in a historic warehouse dating to 1875, this property is rich in character, and wears its heritage well in exposed, rough stone walls, rugged, wood floors and industrial pillars. Owing to the unique nature of the building, the private rooms and dormitories are all different, but all share a cheerful color scheme and are comfortable. Musical performances are held regularly in the common area.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
