The International Tiberias Sea of Galilee Marathon – January 8th, 2016
This will be the first Israeli marathon of 2016, which is fitting as it was the first marathon event in Israel, and has been running for 39 years. It is unique as it is the lowest full marathon in the world at 200 meters below sea level. The course goes along the shoreline of the Sea of Galilee through the Jordan Valley. The course is mostly flat and fast, making the marathon challenge slightly more endurable, and giving the opportunity for a new personal record.
Israman, Ironman Race Eilat – January 27-30, 2016
The Israman challenge, the Israeli Iron Man competition is one the top ten most difficult triathlons in the world, and is held in Eilat. If you thought running a marathon was challenging, try swimming 3.8 kilometers and biking 180 kilometers prior. It is also possible to do half of the 226 kilometer triathlon, which still presents itself with the quite the challenge.
The Ein Gedi Experience – Half Marathon and Masada Run – 6 February, 2016
The International Ein Gedi race brings in both local and international athletes. Its popularity can be explained by the incredible view, atmosphere and its altitude as the lowest place on earth. Other than the half marathon, there is also a ten kilometer and a two kilometer race. This year will mark the 33rd Ein Gedi Experience.
On the same day, the Masada run will take place which is a 2.5 kilometer run up a rocky, 300 meter ascent path, ending with 750 steep stone steps. This is no easy feat, to say the least.
Tel Aviv Samsung Marathon – February 26th, 2016
This event is expected to have 40,000 runners partake this year, and is one of Tel Aviv’s main projects to attract an international crowd. On top of the full marathon, this event offers a half marathon, a 10 kilometer, a five kilometer, a children’s mini marathon, as well as a 42 kilometer hand cycle for athletes with special needs. The course is unique and urban, as it goes down the Tel Aviv and Jaffa seashore, as well as the main streets of Tel Aviv. It is probably the gimmickiest race with an large sponsored exposition, and tons of running gadgets and accessories to get participants pumped up for the big event.
Jerusalem Winner Marathon – March 18, 2016
This year’s marathon will be the sixth held in Jerusalem and will host over 20,000 runners from 54 nations. It includes a full marathon, a half marathon, a competitive five-kilometer, a popular five-kilometer, an 800 meter community track, as well as a hand bike race. It also accessible for people with disabilities. The course goes through the historical city of Jerusalem’s landscapes, mountains and through many top cultural spots. However, the beautiful scenery has its price to pay with some hills to run on this course – or perhaps the beauty will serve as a distraction to the challenge.
Herzliya Women’s Triathlon – May 5, 2016
This will be the 23rd Herzilya Triathlon that takes place on the Mediterranean shore of the coastal town of Herzliya, just north of Tel Aviv. Women can compete either independently or as part of a team, dividing up the roles of swimming, biking and running. Last year was a great success with over 1800 women who participated, ranging from ages eight to 80 years old. This event is in memory of Tamar Dvoskin, a triathlete who was killed in a hit and run accident, at the early age of 21 while training on her bike.
Bible Marathon – October 21, 2016
This is a new race, as this year will be the second Bible Marathon held. It is called the Bible Marathon since participants will be running in the footsteps of the first man to run the 42 kilometer distance from the battlefield at Eben Ezer (Rosh Ha’ayin today) to Shiloh. The runners’ mission is to inform Eli the priest of Israel of the defeat in the war and the death of his sons. This event also offers a half marathon, and the capture of the Ark of the Covenant. This race also offers a 15 kilometer and a 5 kilometer run.
