Lying on Israel’s Mediterranean coast, Tel Aviv has a heady mix of achingly cool neighbourhoods, creative gastronomy and beach-town vibes.

Tel Aviv’s hot artistic scenes, sandy city-side beaches and thriving cafe culture are just a handful of reasons to put Israel’s second-largest – and no doubt hippest – city on your radar. It’s got a potent mix of historical clout and youth-driven innovation. Here’s our pick of the best holiday apartments in Tel Aviv.

This neighbourhood offers the most diverse foodie experiences in the city and easy access to Meir Park, a serene pocket of quiet since the 1940s. The aptly named Carmel Market Apartments are part of the Master by Leonardo Hotels collection, putting you in the hands of high standards. Every accommodation is tastefully decorated, and the staff have a genuine passion for what makes Tel Aviv great.

For more than 20 years, Tel Avivians have considered Shenkin Street as the city’s trendiest shopping lane, with designer boutiques and independent stores lining both sides. You’ll be on this very street and close to the ever-popular Carmel Market, open since the 1920s. These apartments also belong to Master by Leonardo Hotels, so expect the functionality and comfort of home life with some stylish perks, including top-level concierge service and toiletries.

All 20 stylish units have sweeping terraces overlooking Allenby Street or a delightful backyard. They range from studios to one- and two-bedroom suites; the largest offers 52sqm (560sqft) of space and a private entrance hall. The black bathroom, adorned with gold fittings, is opulent, and you’ll find abstract artworks of Jackie O in bright colours. The building is about 100-years-old and sits in a bohemian neighbourhood with a thriving late-night bar scene.

5. Rena’s House

Built in 1954 by David Zimand in honour of his wife Rena, the house originally held small textile factories and stood derelict for years until 2016. The renovation vision was simple: to create a community space where Tel Avivians and tourists can meet and interact. The result is a wonderful mix of accommodation with artist studios, regular exhibitions, live music and a popular vibrant restaurant serving Israeli classics.

6. Emilia TLV

The beach is a five-minute walk from Emilia TLV. If you head inland, you’ll find shops, restaurants, bars and Tel Aviv’s tourist attractions. The entry-level deluxe apartments have two bedrooms, all the cooking and living space you need and a sprawling private balcony. Book the penthouse for an even bigger private balcony to admire the city skyline with a glass of wine as the sun sinks below the horizon.

7. Renoma Hotel and Apartments

At the Renoma Hotel and Apartments, the first-floor spa is impressive with a sauna, rain shower and full massage menu, but it’s the spacious rooms with oodles of character that really pack a wow here. The aparthotel is named after French photographer Maurice Renoma, who played a big role in curating the hotel’s interiors, including the butter-soft leather furniture, Arabic tiling and vast walk-in closets. Choose between one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. There is a cafe on the ground floor, and the hotel’s Bar 51 creates seasonal dishes.

8. The Levee – Fine Stays

Luxury

The Levee is a palatial 1913 villa transformed into an ultra-contemporary aparthotel with eight beautiful, light-filled apartments. Everyone is welcome, from solos and duos to large families. You’ll enjoy lots of space and a taste of local living in one of the city’s most desirable areas, the historic Neve Tzedek district. The attention to detail begins with 100 percent Egyptian cotton linen and Molton Brown toiletries, while local interior designer Yael Siso took care of the cutting-edge design.

9. Mr Ben Yehuda

Pass the old surfboard near the entrance and step inside this Bauhaus building to immerse yourself in a laid-back surf-style sanctuary. The one- and two-bedroom apartments (18 in total) are high-end and illustrate the spirit of the sea with playful bohemian design, vintage beach materials and lots of natural light (without veering into beach-hostel territory). On the ground floor, you’ll find an “office room” open to all, an indoor playground for kids and a communal bookshelf. Here, you’ll be surrounded by the young and buzzy Old North neighbourhood.

10. Sea Executive Suites

These upscale, eco-friendly apartments are available in various sizes. Some come with a sea view, but every unit has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The sprawling rooftop terrace offers beachside views against whitewashed wood and thick Arabic rugs. The restored port isn’t far – it’s a local hotspot in the northern part of the city. If you enjoy a coastal walk, the promenade will take you to Jaffa in the south.
