As you’d imagine for Scotland’s third largest city, Aberdeen is well served when it comes to excellent places to grab quality coffee or a tasty lunch. Here is our selection of the very best coffee shops and cafés in the Granite City.

1. Almondine

Bakery, Tea , French, Dessert

With renowned handmade macarons, scrumptious French patisseries, and an impressive range of teas, coffees, and hot chocolate to die for, Almondine has rapidly made a name for itself. There are gluten-free options available, crêpes, salads, sandwiches and, if you book ahead, afternoon tea with the option of a glass of bubbles for a wee bit extra.

2. Café Cognito

Cafe, Healthy, Soup, Tea , British, Vegetarian

With an excellent local sourcing ethos, friendly staff and the feel of a true community hub, Café Cognito is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The food menu varies depending upon what is available locally, but there are breakfast options, light bites, paninis, cakes, ice cream and waffles, to name a few. Great in Scotland‘s summer, with a quirky outdoor seating area, in winter there are also blankets, heaters and umbrellas for those who want to still sit outside!

3. Foodstory Café

Cafe, Restaurant, Tea , Healthy, British, Soup, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free

Foodstory Café is full to bursting with character. Whether it is the excellent food on offer (with vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free food options available, all healthy, locally sourced and marvellous), the top-notch coffee and other drinks, or the regular events — this is somewhere you will want to return to again and again. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere and quirky décor fit perfectly.

5. Cocoa Ooze

Cafe, Tea

Cocoa Ooze are an award-winning chocolatier whose café sells cakes, scones, sandwiches and baguettes, along with a good range of teas and coffees. These are well received and tasty — but when you factor in the chocolate, Cocoa Ooze really shines. The truffles are wonderful, the chocolates themselves divine, and the hot chocolate selection simply amazing. Their afternoon tea option (book ahead) is fantastic too. If you are a fan of cocoa, then you should not miss a visit here.

6. Sweet Mumma's Kitchen

Cafe, Soup, Tea , British

Situated in a quirky refurbished railway arch and featuring fantastic quality home cooked food and superb coffee, Sweet Mumma’s Kitchen also has a reputation for their efficient and friendly staff. There are also gluten-free options available. In fact the only real complaint is that this café doesn’t open at the weekends! If you are nearby during the week, however, then you are guaranteed to find something to tempt you.

7. Kilau Coffee

Coffee Shop, British, Tea , Gluten-free

Located just a short walk from The Machar, in the heart of Old Aberdeen, Kilau Coffee is a favourite of Aberdeen’s student and academic population alike. They have an extensive range of gluten and lactose-free options, as well as catering for vegans too. Despite being constantly busy, the café has a cosy and relaxed atmosphere and friendly, efficient staff. Kilau is a true hidden gem.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
