Picture of Ellie Griffiths
Updated: 29 June 2016
Nothing says summer like outdoor festivals! Since the first Bard in the Botanics festival, over 50 productions have travelled across Scotland, and beyond, celebrating the very best works by the great bard himself, Shakespeare. This summer, four highly anticipated productions travel to Glasgow, bringing audiences to tears of laughter in some and a sense of remorse in others. The Culture Trip London discovers what’s coming to a botanic near you!

Twelfth Night

A somewhat simple tale of boy meets girl, however, the shipwrecked Viola disguises herself as a man to join the services led by Duke Orsino, with whom she falls in love. Although Viola is in love with Duke, the love triangle thickens because Duke is in love with Lady Olivia, while Lady Olivia is in love with the man who is, in fact, the disguised Viola. This joyful production of one of Shakespeare’s comedies is full of surprises and laughter.

Macbeth

Everyone knows the iconic story of the prophecy made of Macbeth, who is destined to be king. However, it seems that ‘blood will have blood’, as the only way for Macbeth to be crowned is through murder. Although his wife supports and helps his actions, this take on evil will continuously return and drive them to hell, a hell made by their own making. This dramatic take on Shakespeare‘s thriller is cast by only five actors and will have you on the edge of your seat in no time.
