The Wild West
Influenced by the rich Native American culture and the landscapes of the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains, Pierre Frey was one of the major interior firms to champion this look for 2018. ‘Composed of embroideries with geometric patterns, jacquards, stripes and prints, Arapahos proposes a view of the American Far West that is situated somewhere between fantasy and reality,’ explains the brand. Scion’s Nuevo collection is based on a similar theme, influenced by the graphic and interlocking geometrics of Mexican and South American designs to create bold and playful products with an urban edge.
The country look is having a resurgence right now, especially with people lusting after Soho Farmhouse-esque interiors – essentially a sophisticated country vibe without the frills and chintz. While there’s still a traditional element to the look, it’s more tongue in cheek, with fun prints that play on traditional motifs, which would also work in town houses as well as rustic settings. Mulberry’s Modern Country wallpaper, trimmings and weaves collection is the perfect example, with its ‘Flying Ducks’, ‘On the Scent’ and ‘Game Birds’ designs that can be paired with laid-back muted textiles, from soft checks to textured linens.
The glamour of the French Riviera and scenic Mediterranean countryside are big influences this year, with watery oceanic and celadon hues, warm mediterranean colours and flecks of gold. Both Lelièvre Paris and C & C Milano have drawn inspiration from the warm and earthy Mediterranean landscapes, as well as the reflective surfaces and golden glowing sunlight of the sea. Lelièvre Paris’ collection ranges from Olea, a pretty geometric print that plays with the idea of shadow and light on an olive leaf, to a detailed tapestry depicting a Mediterranean botanical garden of wild and herbaceous plants. Similarly, C & C Milano’s colour themes are inspired by four elements of the Mediterranean’s coastal scenery: ‘the Mediterranean scrub with its blue-greenish tones; warm touches of spiced paprika and curry; the precious transparencies of mother of pearl and the captivating blues of the sea depths,’ says the brand.
Some of the brands at London Design Week showcased witty and playful designs, with one stand-out range being the collaborative effort between Brooklyn-based wallpaper brand Flavor Paper and Belgian producer Arte. Inspired by the tongue-in-cheek consumer-focused Pop Art movement, the Flavor Paper for Arte range similarly creates motifs out of everyday objects, from its high-gloss, fruity ‘B-A-N-A-N-A-S !’ and ‘Cherry Forever’ designs to the attention-grabbing ‘Sharp Decent’, which depicts glittering razor-sharp objects falling from the sky.
While last year was all about the celestial-inspired details and glittering metallics, this year many companies are taking a more down-to-earth approach, mixing luxurious materials with laid-back textures. Porta Romana, for example, introduced its Cosmos range last year, which was a mix of space-punk metallics and moon-textured light fittings, but for its 2018 collection it’s Stillness lighting range combines simple Brutalist-inspired silhouettes with pretty block-printed linens and velvet. Neisha Crosland’s Garden Collection for Turnell & Gigon is a range of 10 digitally printed wallpapers that look like silk, but are printed on raffia and canvas, taking inspiration from Japanese prints and the Asian Ceramic Galleries of Musee Guiment in Paris, as well as garden structures such as trellises and pagodas. A medley of Persian jades, Ming yellows, soft tangerines, spicy reds and hibiscus make up the warm and earthy colour palette.
