‘The Lost World’: London’s New Jungle-Themed Cinema Pop-Up

Swap the concrete jungle for the real thing this Autumn — well, almost the real thing. ‘The Lost World’, an immersive, jungle-themed cinema, has popped up in London courtesy of Backyard Cinema, with an exciting programme of adventure flicks planned to complement the tropical environment, whisking Londoners away to a land that time forgot.

The literally-named Backyard Cinema began life in its founder’s back garden. From these humble beginnings, the cinephile team have grown to become one of the city’s best-loved roaming, theatrical cinemas, setting up in iconic or unusual locations around London, and using in-depth sets, actors and live music to create immersive experiences.

Backyard Cinema are also behind the popular annual Music Film Festival on the cobbles of Camden Market, one of the highlights of London’s open-air cinema season. Past projects have included The Winter Night Garden, a cosy winter-themed cinema at Winterville 2015, and a special screening in a candle-lit church for the 20th anniversary of Romeo+Juliet, complete with live choir.

Having teamed up with production team the Halo Group, their latest pop-up experience can be found in the Mercato Metropolitano, a new artisan Italian food market near Elephant and Castle. Cinemagoers will enter through a genuinely atmospheric ‘secret entrance of temple ruins’, winding up to the central jungle area — a decadent, bark-strewn room filled with convincing tropical plants, trees and sound effects, with jungle-themed cocktails available at the bar, and squishy bean bags arranged beneath a huge screen with a state-of-the-art audio sound system.

The theme is reflected in the programming, with a great lineup of classic action and adventure films ahead. Childhood favourites of the likes of Tarzan, Hook, The Lion King, Jumanji or The Jungle Book keep juvenile jungle explorers happy, while more seasoned adventurers can catch screenings of Apocalypse Now, Jurassic Park, Rambo or Apocalypto.
