The Best South American Restaurants in Soho, London

Picture of Christina Dean
Updated: 24 July 2017
With Mexican, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, even Japanese-Brazilian fusion, the vibrancy and diversity of South American food is well represented in Soho. These are our pick of the best restaurants.

Tostado

Restaurant, South American
Save to wishlist

Using recipes that have been handed down in the León family for generations, Tostado serves up traditional Ecuadorian food to the people of Soho. Ceviche and soup are pillars of Ecuadorian cuisine and they take pride of place on the menu, alongside dishes like prawns in garlic butter, chorizo and plantain. If you’re totally new to this kind of food, the Tostado Tasting Menu – prawn ceviche, flat iron steak with chimichurri, llapingachos (Incan potato and cheese patties) and avocado – is a great way to experience what it’s all about.

Nice mixed ceviche and sweet plantains with cheese. Ecuadorian. @tostadobar

Senor Ceviche

Restaurant, Peruvian, $$$
Save to wishlist

Senor Ceviche first started life as a pop-up before opening a permanent spot in Carnaby’s Kingly Court (and a second site in Fitzrovia has since followed). Its bright décor, a reference to downtown Lima, is matched by the punchy flavours of the food. As well as the signature ceviches, Senor Ceviche also excels at Peruvian BBQ with Nikkei-style flat iron steak and slow cooked pork ribs on the menu. Make it a truly Peruvian affair by pairing your food with a couple of pisco sours.

Casita Andina

Restaurant, Peruvian, $$$
Save to wishlist

Casita Andina (little sister to Shoreditch’s Andina and owned by Martin Morales) is modeled after a picanteria, a traditional Peruvian family-run restaurant set in Georgian townhouse. The menu moves between vibrant and healthy plates like ceviche casita, watermelon and black quinoa salad to the more indulgent and comforting pork tamal and choco-sauco dessert. Not only does the food celebrate the Peruvian Andes, but the textiles and art inside the restaurant pay homage to the culture of the region too.

Ceviche Soho

Bar, Restaurant, Peruvian, $$$
Save to wishlist

Another of Martin Morales’ places, Ceviche Soho is restaurant-bar that helped to popularise Peruvian food in London and still seems to be permanently buzzing. You can just drop by for a drink – the pisco sours are a knockout here – but take the time to sit at the bar for a meal. You can watch the excellent ceviches being made fresh in front of you and the corn cakes with avocado and dishes from the grill are also worth an order.

Temakinho

Restaurant, Brazilian, Japanese, Fusion
Save to wishlist

Japanese-Brazilian fusion has become extremely popular thanks to the large Japanese community in Brazil. That fusion has made its way to Soho in the shape of Temakinho. The food menu is mainly made of sushi, temaki, ceviche and poke, and they have taken great care to only source sustainable fish. The Brazilian influence comes through strongly on the drinks front, not only do they have a range of Brazilian beers and Guarana soft drinks, but their caipirinhas are a knockout too. Dine in the tropical décor, complete with monkey lamps hanging from the ceiling.

La Bodega Negra

Restaurant, Mexican, $$$
Save to wishlist

La Bodega Negra nods to Soho’s seedy past as from the outside, the restaurant looks like a sex shop. Inside it’s no less atmospheric, decked out like hacienda cellar. The menu isn’t massive but offers a fair spread of Mexican food, from tacos, tostadas and ceviche, to more substantial plates like slow roasted lamb barbacoa. The drinks list is much more comprehensive, with lots of tequila and mezcal on offer as well as some very punchy margaritas. If you want to keep things a little more PG, the street level café, which you enter on the next street over is lighter, brighter and more casual.

This was actually a Mexican restaurant, no lie🌮🌯#tacos#saucy#lastnightwasmadreal

El Camion

Bar, Restaurant, Mexican, $$$
Save to wishlist

If you’re in need of some sunshine, head to the Baja California-inspired El Camion. Classic Mexican fare like quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas and burritos are served in the colourful upstairs restaurant and the good times continue on the basement bar The Pink Chihuahua. Tequila is the star down here with blanco, reposado and añejo varieties as well as excellent margaritas and other tequila based cocktails.

Lovely 😍🇵🇹
