The Best Italian Restaurants in Westminster

Picture of Christina Dean
Updated: 23 September 2017
It may be full of government buildings and offices but Westminster also boasts plenty of Italian restaurants, with food from many different regions well represented. These are our favourites.

Quirinale

Restaurant, Italian, none
Save to wishlist

Named after Rome’s presidential palace and not too far away from our own Houses of Parliament, Quirinale manages to be smart without being pretentious. As well as a bright and airy dining room and attentive service, you’ll be faced with a strong regional wine list and traditional Italian fare like beef carpaccio, veal Milanese and spaghetti with crab. They also have fresh truffles available when they’re in season so it’s easy to add a little more luxury to your meal.

Osteria dell'Angolo

Restaurant, Italian, none
Save to wishlist

Thanks to the terracotta coloured interiors you’ll be transported straight to Italy as soon as you step inside Osteria dell’Angolo. There’s a good spread of classic regional dishes like rabbit tagliatelle from Ischia, Puglian cured meats and Sicilian cannolo, which are joined by more creative plates monkfish-filled black ink tortelli with courgettes and calamari. Everything is made with quality Italian ingredients though, and whilst the wine list isn’t exclusively Italian, there are plenty of regional bottles to choose from.

Colosseo Restaurant

Restaurant, Italian, none
Save to wishlist

Given that Colosseo is bang on halfway between Westminster Abbey and Victoria, it’s a pretty popular spot with tourists. Location isn’t the only draw here though; it’s informal but still welcoming, the menu is full of crowd-pleasers including spaghetti carbonara, roast seabass and a variety of pizzas, and you get it all to takeaway too.

Sicily Restaurant

Patisserie, Restaurant, Italian, none
Save to wishlist

Founded by the Scalzo brothers, who are also involved in the Patisserie Valerie chain, Sicily is all about the combination of Italian flavours and locally sourced fresh ingredients. It’s the kind of place where you can drop in for a coffee or glass of Sicilian wine, a couple of small plates or a full meal of fresh pasta, pizza or a Sicilian speciality and they even host live jazz and blues on Friday and Saturday nights.

Gustoso Ristorante & Enoteca

Restaurant, Italian, none
Save to wishlist

As a ristorante Gustoso is very classic in its approach, with everything from aubergine parmigiana to Venetian style calves liver to sausage and broccoli orecchiette on the menu. The prices are very reasonable too considering the location, with the set menus coming in at even better value for money. And as you’d expect from the enoteca side, they’re strong on the wine front with varieties coming by the glass and two sizes of carafes as well as by the bottle. All in all, it’s a great little place to have up your sleeve.

Olivo

Restaurant, Italian, $$$
Save to wishlist

From one restaurant that opened in 1990, Olivo has grown into a mini Sardinian empire including an informal restaurant, a fish specialist, a meat-focused restaurant, a deli and a gelateria. The original Olivo is the best place to get a taste of what it’s all about, which is authentic Sardinian fare. From couscous soup to spaghetti with bottarga to carpaccio of red prawns, swordfish and tuna, the dishes at Olivo are a celebration of the fantastic ingredients the island has to offer.

Santini

Restaurant, Italian, none
Save to wishlist

Having been going over 30 years, Santini is an unashamedly elegant restaurant – Frank Sinatra used to dine here a lot – and it has retained much of that old fashioned atmosphere. It’s sometimes referred to as a Venetian restaurant but the kitchen draws inspiration from across Italy with Sardinian pasta, Roman chicory salad and veal Milanese on the menu alongside plates like roasted quail, pancetta, polenta and prunes. The prices definitely reflect the grandeur of the place, especially on the wine list, so save this one for a special occasion.

Il Convivio

Restaurant, Italian, none
Save to wishlist

Il Convivio has been heavily inspired by Dante, so much so that lines of his poetry are embossed onto the walls of the restaurant, itself in a converted Georgian townhouse. The food is modern – think black spaghetti with lobster and monkfish in mussel broth with olives and caperberries – and makes use of the finest Italian ingredients, so expect it to cost you. It’s still worth a visit though, especially when the weather is good as the conservatory has a retractable roof.
