Half zoo and half theme park, Chessington World of Adventures, UK, is made for family breaks. More than 1,000 animals inhabit the safari park and aquarium, including tigers and capybaras. Animal-themed carousels, rollercoasters and water rides fill the theme park. With so much to see and do, a stay at a nearby hotel can ensure you make the most of the park. Choose between the Azteca Hotel, with its toucan, monkey and Aztec temple theme, or the adjacent Safari Hotel, where rooms might be zebra or perhaps penguin themed. The Safari has a view of the African animals in the park, while both serve themed breakfasts and include theme park access with overnight stays. Entertainment on offer, shared between both hotels, includes live shows and a kids’ club. This one is perfect for families with younger children.

In the leafy town of Esher, a 15-minute drive from Chessington World of Adventures, the Swan Inn is a country-style pub with boutique rooms. The pub may be traditionally British in feel, but the menu showcases chef José Pizarro’s Spanish-style tapas and paella dishes. There’s also a particularly good selection of Spanish wines (though you can sip a pint of British ale if you fancy). Rooms are in the converted barn next door, and the mosaic tiles in the rainfall showers are a nod to Pizarro’s Spanish roots.

On the banks of the Thames, next to Hampton Court Palace, the Mitre combines British tradition with elegance.
