For two weeks every July, southwest London becomes a magnet for the greatest tennis players on the planet. If you’re planning on being among them, check out our list of the best hotels in the area.

You’re just a 10-minute cab ride from the All England Club at the Lodge, meaning you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting off. The hotel’s signature Full English is the perfect remedy if you imbibed a few of SW19’s famed Pimm’s the day before. Though if you’d prefer to save room for an imminent strawberries and cream, try the lighter option of a mushroom and tomato omelette.

2. Hotel du Vin Wimbledon

The Park View Signature Suite is the pick of the rooms, with an Emperor-size bed, walk-in monsoon shower and a balcony overlooking the 35-acre (14ha) Cannizaro Park. Return for drinks and antipasti at the Italian-inspired Orangery restaurant – choose from a wealth of cheeses and meats, including oozy taleggio and prosciutto di Parma.

This charming Fulham hotel houses eight generously sized rooms, each taking inspiration from the explorer whose name is also given to the characterful pub located below. You’ll find Union Jack cushions, world map wallpaper and bureaus that wouldn’t have looked out of place on James Cook’s HMS Endeavour. The owners do an excellent job of infusing the place with an old-school British vibe without feeling stuffy; there’s no better example of this than the good-humoured pub quiz on a Sunday evening.

5. Putney Hotel

Guesthouse

This industrial-looking hotel masks an array of gold-and-white hotel rooms inside. Situated just minutes from Putney Bridge, it is perfectly located for a day at Wimbledon (10 minutes south) or a match at Chelsea FC (15 minutes north). The riverside area, packed with pubs, makes up for the lack of hotel bar. For live sport, head to the Fox & Hounds pub opposite. The hotel does have a quirky tea room that is open for breakfast and serves international dishes and speciality teas until late.

6. Petersham Hotel

The pastoral view from this Victorian mansion, over cattle fields and green meadows, will make you forget that you’re in the urban capital of England. This panorama is best enjoyed while tucking into chef Jean-Didier Gouges’ fusion menu at the on-site restaurant, combining his expertise in Japanese, British, Mediterranean and French cuisine. Built in 1865, the hotel’s 58 rooms retain their classic styles, with marble bathrooms and wrought-iron balconies overlooking the winding Thames.

7. Warren House

The signature afternoon tea here, with its truffle egg mayo sandwiches and Cornish clotted cream scones, wouldn’t look out of place in the Royal Box at Wimbledon. Especially if you opt for the addition of champagne. Rooms here vary from standard singles to deluxe and feature rooms. For a real treat, opt for the Hammersley suite, named after Warren House’s first owner and featuring period fireplaces, chandeliers, bay windows and a roll-top bath.

8. Bingham Riverhouse

Rooms at this boutique hotel come with copper baths, hanging bedside lamps and throwback rotary phones. Ask staff about the building’s literary history, which is reflected in its themed decor and loaded bookcases. Not much of a reader? The hotel can provide you with bikes to explore the surrounding parks on two wheels. It’ll take you roughly half an hour to cycle to the All England Club from here.
