Close to Shoreditch and Whitechapel, Bethnal Green epitomises all the diversity and vibrancy that East London has to offer. Among the high-rise blocks of flats and bright shopfronts, there are some beautiful boutique places to stay; you just have to know where to look. Luckily for you, Culture Trip has done all the graft so you don’t have to. Here are the best hotels in Bethnal Green to book right now.

40 Winks

Fondly known as a micro-hotel, 40 Winks is one of Bethnal Green’s most exclusive places to stay. There are only two bedrooms available and, thanks to its sterling reputation, you’ll need to organise your booking well in advance. It’s filled with eclectic treasures but avoids feeling cluttered, and there is nothing in these rooms that hasn’t been thoughtfully placed: a leather-bound trunk here, a handcrafted lamp there. Everything, down to the complimentary continental breakfast, is exquisite. Its only drawback is that there’s just one bathroom, but it’s a beautiful one nonetheless. Painted in burnished gold, it has a substantial roll-top bath and granite-topped sinks. Not into sharing? You can book out both rooms and enjoy it as a suite.

Housed inside an old Victorian warehouse, The Boundary Project is set up so that you never need to leave. As well as 17 guest rooms, there are three restaurants, two bars, a bakery and a deli, so it would be very easy to stay here for your entire visit. Make sure you do leave, though. Shoreditch is just on the doorstep, and there’s many a vintage shop, coffee house and restaurant to discover. The bedrooms have loads of natural light and each has a quirky design feature, whether it be a chair made by a young British designer or an exposed brick wall. It’s the epitome of Shoreditch: stylish, edgy and completely on the pulse.

In the heart of Bethnal Green, not far from Hackney, Town Hall Hotel and Apartments takes its name from the building’s beginnings as – you guessed it – the town hall. The Edwardian building has had its 15 minutes of fame, having been featured in such films as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), but these days, it’s content to be a luxurious Art Deco boutique hotel. It’s a member of Design Hotels, so it is sensitively and beautifully furnished. Its modern decor perfectly juxtaposes the building’s original features, all of which have been restored to their former glory. A stay in one of the suites will have you sleeping under the cornicing on a mezzanine level, and when you book into a standard room, you’ll be treated to a state-of-the-art, open-plan bathroom. The indoor pool looks like a piece of modern art, while the bar is straight out of downtown New York. But despite these lofty design credentials, the hotel is far from pretentious – useful amenities such as childcare, laundry services and a 24-hour front desk make it a welcoming home away from home.

Just recently, The East London Hotel has sprung up among the restaurants and bars of historic Paradise Row in Bethnal Green, treating guests to 161 slick and functional bedrooms and a relaxed, fluid restaurant/bar space. As is often the case with modern hotels, the developers have done away with the reception, and guests check themselves in online instead. Rooms are compact and well appointed with free Wi-Fi, Nespresso machines and specially designed mattresses, with the premium rooms offering more space and slightly posher bathrooms. The communal area is sure to become a buzzy hang-out for both Bethnal Green and Shoreditch folk, making it a great stop if you want to soak up the atmosphere of the area.

Another converted East London building that’s been given a new lease of life is this old textile factory, which has been reincarnated as a four-star boutique hotel. Skirting both Whitechapel and Bethnal Green, New Road Hotel is round the corner from popular Indian restaurant Tayyabs (book or be prepared to queue) and features its own delectable menu from chef Marco Pierre White at the hotel’s chophouse. Make sure you check out the charming Cereal Grind, too, a morning café that allows you to create your own cereal blend. The urban-retro rooms have kept the original factory features – book into a Pocket Room and hole up in a king-size, diner-booth-like bed, but if you can stretch to the Loft+Jacuzzi Room, you’ll be rewarded with an al fresco hot tub on your own private terrace. What could be better than that?
