The Best French Restaurants in Soho, London

Picture of Christina Dean
Updated: 19 July 2017
Not only are French restaurants, like in neighbouring Covent Garden, well represented in Soho, the area has strong historical ties to France – it was home to the first restaurant in Britain to serve escargot and to a pub that housed the French resistance during World War II.

Brasserie Zédel

Brasserie, Restaurant, French, $$$
Save to wishlist

Brasserie Zédel takes the idea of a classic Parisian brasserie and turns it up a few notches. The place is enormous – 260 covers set in the art deco basement with more space in the Bar Américain, Crazy Coqs cabaret venue, and ZL Café – and they serve traditional French fare throughout the day. The prix fixe menu, featuring steak haché, and Gâteau Opéra, is fantastic value and the Plâts du Jour selection is perfect for when you just can’t decide what to have.

Pierre Victoire

Bistro, Restaurant, French, $$$
Save to wishlist

Pierre Victoire is an understated gem of restaurant that works just as well for a relaxed lunch as it does a romantic dinner. The à la carte menu is extensive for a bistro, with three variations of steak & frites joining around 10 other main courses. The prices cannot be faulted though and the service is always spot on, making Pierre Victoire great for a pre-theatre meal.

Prix Fixe

Brasserie, Restaurant, French, $$$
Save to wishlist

The small but charming Prix Fixe, sister to Pierre Victoire, is everything you’d want from a typical brasserie, right down to the French posters adorning the walls. Classic dishes like foie gras, magret of duck and steak frites join more contemporary French-European plates and the long set menu offers up lots of choice at excellent value.

L'Escargot

Restaurant, French, $$$
Save to wishlist

Established in 1927 (and housed in a building that dates back to 1741), L’Escargot is a Soho landmark and was the first restaurant in the country to serve its namesake dish, even farming the snails in the basement. Marco Pierre White was at the helm in the late 1990s before the restaurant was refurbished in 2014. Snails still feature on the menu to this day alongside other French staples like steak tartare, bouillabaisse and crème brûlée and a predominantly French wine list.

Snails for dinner!

The French House

Pub, French, $$$
Save to wishlist

The French House may not be renowned for its French food but what it does have in spades is history – during World War II the pub serves as a workplace for Charles de Gaulle, and Francis Bacon drank here, as did Dylan Thomas. You can only get beers in halves, not pints, and they don’t like you using your mobile, nor is there music or television played inside, but there’s a fine French wine list and over 30 champagnes for you to get stuck into.
