The Best Flat Whites In London

Surpassing the latte and cappuccino, the flat white has become the coffee of choice in London. You can tell a ‘flattie’ by its velvety milk texture, a natural sweetness and hit of strong coffee. Artisan coffee shops set the trend, so we’ve chosen our favourite go-to coffee spots in London.

Flat White

Bringing their Australasian expertise to Soho, Flat White has been flying the flag and educating Londoners on this signature cup for years. As they put it, ‘a lot goes into making a great cup of coffee’, and this place is now an institution within the coffee culture of London. Serving beans from Drop Coffee Roasters, a Swedish outfit, the coffee is strong, the milk smooth and the welcome friendly.

Fabrique

Located by Hoxton overground station, Fabrique offers the best of Swedish Fika, or coffee break as it is known in English. Although more of a bakery than a café, they still provide great coffee from Swedish coffee roasters Johan & Nystrom, and their flat white, which is presented in a cut-crystal glass, is one of the best in London. When there, you won’t be able to say no to a delicious cinnamon bun, which goes perfectly alongside a flat white.

Grind & Co

With various locations across London, there is always a good flat white in easy reach. The Grind House Espresso blend is roasted daily and tastes delicious. Each branch has its own personality;  Shoreditch Grind has an iconic sign by Old Street station and funky neon quotes decorating the exposed brick walls. Watch out, though; depending on the time of day your barista may try and persuade you to upgrade your flat white to an espresso martini.

Climpson & Sons

Broadway Market is the perfect location to stroll with your flat white, and Climpson & Sons makes one of the best in the capital. Sourcing, roasting and crafting the finest coffees from the heart of East London, they produce good quality, local coffee for your flat white. In 2013, they started using a roaster that is more energy efficient, making this the cleanest, greenest, flat white option.

Kaffeine

Kaffeine by name, caffeine by nature. Both branches are located just off Oxford Street, and serve great coffee in an antipodean setting. Using Square Mile’s finest blends, they also offer a guest roast every weekend so that you can vary your coffee to your mood. Highly regarded in the coffee community, Kaffeine takes great care in coffee making and now even offers a course so that you can learn how to make your own flat white.
