The upcoming remake of popular TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is reportedly set to make cinematic history by featuring the first gay superhero.

Early reviews of the film reveal that Yellow Ranger Trini, played by American singer and actress Becky G, is having ‘girlfriend problems’.

Director Dean Israelite told The Hollywood Reporter that the scene is ‘pivotal’, and added that, ‘For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is.’

‘She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, “That’s OK.” The movie is saying, “That’s OK,” and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.’

Earlier this month, Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon announced that there was a ‘gay moment‘ in his live-action adaptation of the Disney classic.

Josh Gad’s LeFou is revealed to be in love with Gaston, and later on in the movie there is a brief moment featuring the character and another man. The film has been banned in a small number of independent cinemas in America as well as in Kuwait and Malaysia. It has also been given a mature rating in Russia after it was reviewed by censors.

The controversy did little to dent the film at the box office, with many pundits arguing that the furore probably aided the fairytale film to record openings this weekend.

Power Rangers is on release from March 24
