Come one, come all to the wonderful world of one of England’s own finest world travellers, Phileas J. Fogg. Located in the streets of the ultra-sleek Mayfair district, Mr. Fogg of Mayfair invites you to come and explore the number of libations at this classy bar in honour of Jules Verne’s famous character.
This is not just any typical pub or local, the bar is an embodiment of Fogg himself. Complete with quirky details of his travels from bicycles hanging from the ceiling to parachutes dangling from the chandeliers -this place is definitely one of a kind. Upon entrance, a doorman laden in authentic Victorian garb will ask for your coat, as a waitress in the same kind of costume will take you to your table. Corner to corner, the whole place is filled with raggedy flags, leather couches and old wooden storage crates used as tables. It is both an antique collectors dream and a classy, sophisticated and rustic establishment.
Being Mayfair, the bar is on the more lavish end of the spectrum, but it is a small price to pay to sip on some of the concoctions that have been put together. The menu, split into whiskey, vodka, gin and rum to start with, offers a variety of drinks and descriptions that will definitely tingle your taste buds. With names such as the Million Rupee or the Maidens’ Blush, there is no competition when it comes to Mr.Fogg’s innovation and creativity in his cocktails. Of course this is without even mentioning the selection of champagne, wine and beer. And would this really be an English bar if it didn’t serve gin and champagne tea?
Come in on Friday’s and Saturdays’ for ‘Tipsy Tea’ at the Fogg residence. The busiest nights, according to one of the Victorian attendants, are usually Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with bookings necessary a few days advance for seating.
What really sets Mr. Fogg’s apart are the botanical gardens. Hidden from plain sight, these hanging vines and canopied ceilings are used as a kind of break from all the hustle and bustle of the bar. With a perfect location set in a cozy corner of Mayfair, patrons are hidden from the city lights and sounds in their very own bungalow. Visitors come out here to breathe in fresh air, marvel at the garden and enjoy the sitting area accompanied by heaters and lanterns. It is a perfect place to be on those chilly summer nights.
Mr. Fogg’s is not just a novelty bar or a place to stare at: with its attention to detail from the names of the drinks to the tin box in which your check is delivered, this is without a doubt one of Mayfair’s must-visit spots.
