London Restaurant Openings December 2016

After popping up at various sites around the capital, Barry and Patricia Hilton have finally found a permanent home in South Kensington for their contemporary take on Levantine cooking. Expect dishes such as slow-roasted lamb shoulder cooked for over five hours, or apple, pomegranate and mint salad served with pea shoots, pine nuts and green chilli.

Inspired by the ingredients from countries around the Caspian sea – think lamb, pomegranates, pistachio, saffron and slicks of tangy spicy dips – Jan opens in Clapham in December. Drinks centre around a range of teas, while cocktails take influence from the region in terms of spices and flavourings. There’s also JAN Beer, brewed especially for the restaurant by microbrewer Brew By Numbers in Bermondsey.

El Pastór

The Hart brothers (of London’s legendary Barrafina and Quo Vadis) are going Mexican. Alongside their namesake dish ‘tacos al pastor’, a kebab-like creation from central Mexico, there will be a range of other daily specials. A wide range of drinks which includes tequila, mescal, cocktails and beer are also available to enjoy.

Radio Alice Pizza
From the founders of the Berbere restaurant in Florence, Radio Alice is named after a 1970s Italian pirate radio station. Interestingly, some toppings are added after the base and sauce is cooked and sliced into portions. Try the pizza viola, which comes with no tomato or cheese, but beetroot purée, sautéed leeks and black olives.

The Gate Marylebone
Vegetarians rejoice, the third Gate opens its doors on December 1st, serving veggie food that founders Adrian and Michael Daniel describe ‘Indo-Iraqi Jewish.

This scion of Borough Market’s Cannon & Cannon is a cured meat bar, bottle shop and deli, serving generous plates of brilliant British cured meat at fair prices. Expect quality but inexpensive wine on tap, an ever changing selection of special bottles and a considered range of beers.

Jamavar London
The first restaurant outpost for the luxury hotel chain outside India opens in Mayfair in December. The family-run business is known for its exacting standards so expect the very best in subcontinental cooking. The space takes inspiration from the Viceroy’s house in New Delhi, while ex-Gymkhana chef Rohit Ghai heads up the kitchen.

MOD pizza
Having previously launched the concept in Leeds and Brighton, the fast-casual pizza chain finally brings something worth eating to the culinary wasteland that is Leicester Square. Diners can choose from a range of 35 toppings (or enjoy 35 all at once!) and the pizzas are assembled and cooked in front of them in around three minutes. No matter what you choose, there’s just one set price.

Ole & Steen
Having served the Danes with delicious hand-made breads and pastries for over 20 years, Danish bakers Ole Kristoffersen and Steen Skallebæk are bringing their time-honed recipes to St James’s Market. We’re looking forward to their raspberry slice, made with handmade pastry, layers of raspberry jam and white lemon icing.
