Filmmakers You Didn’t Know Were Born In London

Some of the biggest names in the film industry are proud to call London their birthplace. Here’s a roundup of some hit filmmakers who were born in the capital, throughout the decades.

Charlie Chaplin

East Street, located in Walworth (South London), is the alleged birthplace of one of the most famous comedy actors and filmmakers in the world, Charlie Chaplin. The star of the black-and-white screen called the London Borough of Kensington home in the early years of his life, where he lived with his mother and brother, Sydney – but interestingly, there is, in fact, no official record of his birth.

Bob Hope

The legendary American actor and director was born across the water in the UK in Eltham, Kent, an area that is now located in the Borough of Greenwich. While Hope was born in London, the early years of his life were spent in Bristol. He then moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio. The iconic actor had a career spanning nearly 80 years, impressively appearing in over 70 short and feature films.

Joan Collins

The world-famous romance novelist was born in Paddington and spent her childhood in its residential neighborhood, the luxurious Maida Vale. Joan Collins has stayed true to her London roots throughout her life, living in different areas of the city. Perhaps most famously in her St John’s Wood mansion, which sat on one of the most exclusive roads in the area, neighbouring other A-listers including Ewan McGregor and Sir Paul McCartney.

Keifer Sutherland

The actor and filmmaker, most famous for his roles in the hit shows 24 and Designated Survivor, was born at London’s Paddington hospital to actor parents Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, who were both working in the UK at the time. However, when Keifer was five years old, the family moved to California. With such famous parents, it seems Keifer was destined for acting from birth but despite his British roots, the actor hasn’t moved back to the UK since.

Elizabeth Taylor

It’s no surprise that the ultra-glam Hollywood superstar Elizabeth Taylor was born in one of the fanciest (and wealthiest) areas of London – Hampstead. The award-winning actress’ family home was located on 8 Wildwood Road in Hampstead Garden Suburb. With its quaint features and surrounding shrubbery, the adorable house looks like something out of a fairytale and because of its location, it is unsurprisingly worth several million pounds.

Idris Elba

Interestingly, Idris Elba was born in the London Borough of Hackney, where his fictional character DCI Luther also resides. The world-class actor, filmmaker and DJ grew up in Hackney and East Ham and went to school in Canning Town, the spot where he first became interested in acting. Shortly afterwards, he dropped out of school and took up a place at the city’s famous National Youth Music Theatre.

Tom Hardy

Despite his seemingly Cockney origins, the British actor and producer was born in Hammersmith and grew up in East Sheen, a London suburb located in Richmond. His South-West London roots are somewhat far from the gritty London gangster he plays in Peaky Blinders as well as his incredible portrayal of the Cray twins in Legend.
