According to the tale, The Queen loves a good late-night walk, especially when she finds it difficult to get to sleep. We can’t blame her, we’ve all been there.
The story goes…
It was 3am and the guardsman was patrolling inside the perimeter of Buckingham Palace. Looking up, down and around, he suddenly clocked a ‘figure in the darkness.’
Armed, fully trained and ready to blast the so-called ‘intruder’ into oblivion, he shouted “who’s that?!”
To his amazement, it was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
After realising who it was, the guard impulsively blurted out: “Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you.”
Expecting to be hung, drawn and quartered, he was pleasantly surprised by the Queen’s response:
“That’s quite all right. Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.”
The rest of the story is history.
