Whilst it’s inevitable that as the new season comes around, the fashion industry’s focus steers clearly towards the major runway trends and how to adapt them to suit the everyday, it’s the sometimes-unnoticed micro trends that we’re celebrating now. Minimal in effort but harbouring the ability to update just about any outfit (even the ones you already own), these are the quick-wins you need to know for 2018.

Discover the AW18 menswear trends spotted at Milan Fashion Week here.

Belts Over Everything

…and we mean everything. Don’t underestimate the power of this time-tested accessory when it comes to styling. The update to know for SS18? When it comes to belting up, follow the mantra: big means best. Eschew the corseted styles that made their way into the spotlight this time last year and instead opt for something simpler. Wide leather iterations nod to heritage design and come adorned with oversized buckles, giving them an industrial edge that feels a whole lot more effortless this time around. Take styling notes from the always-inspirational &Finally duo and cinch the waist of oversized coats whilst the weather stays cold, switching to longline knits as we edge closer towards spring. For evening, it’s satin styles that we’re championing, loosely knotted to add considered detail to kimono-style jackets and loose-fitting cami tops.

Bow Detailing

Could there be anything more feminine than an oversized bow? We suspect not and for that reason, we’re embracing this seemingly inconspicuous detail and adding it to just about everything. Miu Miu set the tone with bejewelled kitten heels whilst The Row kept things a little more low-key with its flat satin styles, each proving that innate femininity doesn’t have to mean cutesy. Not sure you’re ready to commit? Temper the style into your looks with the addition of a ribbon tied around your ponytail or a silk scarf knotted at the base of your bag handle. Alternatively, fuse the aforementioned belted trend with this one and secure that satin-waist style in a loose, oversized bow.

Head to Toe Print

Nothing packs a stylish punch quite like a riotous print, and this season’s take on the look is to go all out and wear it from head to toe. If you’re opting for co-ords, look to longline designs like this stripey set from Zimmerman and the high-street alternative by our trend-focused favourites, Mango – both carry elongating properties and make statement dressing as effortless as if it were the everyday. Clashing designs hold just as much relevance, however, be it all on one dress or styled in your own way. Our top tip for getting creative? Mix one oversized print with a miniature one to up the impact. If there was ever an antidote to winter blues, this is most certainly it.

Wide-Leg Cropped Jeans

Back in LALALAND ❤️

It’s nothing new or exciting to label denim as a trend but there’s one specific silhouette that’s caught our eye this season and its that of the cropped, wide-legged variety. Ticking two SS18 trend boxes in one – a bright-white wash and a statement silhouette combined hold cult-worthy appeal and offer a transitional styling solution. Wear them now to frame a pair of ankle boots and switch to open-back mules in warmer climes, and if white is too summery for now, then ease yourself into the silhouette with a slightly more wearable mid-blue wash. Who knows, you might just be convinced to ditch the ultra skinnies for good this time around?

Micro Pleats

Clever folds and strategic pleated detailing make for a beguiling mix of shape and texture and when applied to muted metallic fabrications, the look becomes ever-more captivating. This season’s riff comes in minimalist proportions as demonstrated on Tibi’s masterful two-piece and it holds elongating abilities that only work to emphasise the flattering qualities of the always in-favour mid-length hemline. Whether you’re committing to the head-to-toe look or you’re championing a single statement piece, this considered design detail will add some well-received complexity to your new-season wardrobe.
