It’s the Queen’s official birthday. To celebrate this momentous occasion, we thought we’d introduce you to the REAL Elizabeth – the one very, very few people see outside her exclusive inner circles. Here are 17 revealing and regal revelations:

1. Nothing annoys Her Majesty more than lateness. According to a few Palace insiders, she isn’t bad-tempered, but when she does lose her patience, she’s known to go nuclear…

2. Prince Philip has several nicknames for The Queen, including, ‘Lilibet’, ‘Darling’ and ‘Sausage’…

3. Those who have been lucky enough to touch her (only HM can instigate physical contact) say she has ‘curiously Cleopatra-soft skin’ – whatever that means…

4. According to those close to her, she has a deep fascination with space travel and astronomy in general. Some say she finds astronaut suits utterly hilarious…

5. The Queen sent her very first email from an army base in 1976.

6. According to Prince William, the Queen gets major giggles whenever she watches Ali G impressions.

7. Her Majesty’s lunch is always served promptly at 1pm sharp. A typical on-the-go lunch is cold meat and salad.

8. Those who have been in a car with her say she is a hair-raising driver who takes corners at record-breaking Formula One speeds…

9. The Queen has never owned a driving licence or a passport.

10. Whenever Her Majesty travels, her luggage is simply marked ‘THE QUEEN’…

11. Amazingly, The Queen has never worn a pair of jeans (because she looks so good in dresses, obviously)…

12. Don’t ask her how to prune your roses – Her Maj detests gardening!

13. The Queen does swear, but she does limit all her expletives to those that begin with a ‘b’…

14. The Queen has visited 116 countries on 265 official visits, making her by far the most-travelled monarch in British history.

15. To make sure she doesn’t get bored during a conversation, The Queen has a series of very secret signs to her ladies-in-waiting. If she shifts her handbag, she wants to move on. A vicious royal stare means one of her ladies needs to come to the rescue, and if she twists her ring, the conversation needs picking up…

16. The Queen and Prince Philip have sent more than 45,000 Christmas cards!

17. In May 2011, the Queen became the first British monarch to visit the Republic of Ireland since Irish independence.
